The Lagos State Government on Friday said arrangements were in top gear to deploy additional 10,000 high-definition closed-circuit television across the state as part of the comprehensive Smart City Programme designed to provide a 24-hour driven economy.

Speaking at the annual Ministerial Press Briefing to mark the third anniversary of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration, the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Mr. Hakeem Fahm, said the smart city initiative was intended to allow the people and companies operate in a safe and secure environment, thereby creating more jobs and increasing the Gross Domestic Product of the state.

According to the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Habib Aruna, Fahm said the focus of the initiative included the provision of security and surveillance, implementation of a metro fibre network and e-Governance.

He added that apart from the HD cameras with gantries deployed in the first phase, other aspects of the project involved the integration of the deployed cameras with Centralised Emergency Command and Control Centre, provision of road signature structure and streetlights across the state.

He said, “In the second phase of the project, we will be deploying 10,000 HD cameras, world class e-Government solutions and data centre solutions, one key alarm, metro fibre network to serve as backbone for communication and unified communications with smart phones for first respondent agencies such as police, fire service, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Lagos State Ambulance Service, Vehicle Inspection Office, among others.”

Good initiative, I have noticed some of recent. only Kano and Lagos with few states seem to be taking security serious.

I hope it won't be like that of GEJ that awarded contract, paid money and no CCTV to show for it.

For me, privacy and security are really important. We think about it in terms of both: You can't have privacy without security.

Can you beat that! Hmmmn, Lagos really working hard to be a true megacity. The rapid development of Lagos is not such a good news for the country though, as migration to the city is only being drastically enhanced. And until a drastic decision is taken, these efforts will only end up futile with time.

What happened to the ones deployed by Fashola earlier?
What happened to the ones deployed by Ambode already?
They have grown legs and disappeared into Tinubu and APC bank accounts
Is that how they are fighting corruption? By stealing the people’s money?

I have noticed that lagos is getting it right in terms of security.....i have been driving around lagos and noticed the numerous cctv cameras positioned at almost every major road and corners in lagos and being monitored online real time from the network operating centers....giving the security operatives a good hold on the city.....any robbery or crime that takes place in the city will be contained in mins.

No wonder the recent bank robbery on thursday at zenith bank abule egba was foiled in mins and the whole eight robbers fully armed arrested,

This is laudable, gunshot detection facilities should be integrated into this, measures should also be put in place to ensure quick police response to distress calls.
It is also important to put in place measures to check vandalism.

Read in between the lines, he said "Lagos state will provide additional 10,000 cameras". The question is: When? If they know what they are doing they should be able to give you timelines.

Lagos as a state does not have metro fiber yet, they don't have any agreement YET with any of the providers to use their metro fiber, so how are they connect these cameras?

Lagos state do not have centralized monitoring centered YET, so how do they plan to roll this out.

I have been part of the planning of these and it has not cone to since the last 2 years +. It is unfortunate that they have to run to the media without even having a blue print, well I guess it is all part of 2019. So sad
