Things To Do With Your CV To Attract Employers by Tobenchy(m): 1:40pm On May 14, 2018
When you are looking to find local jobs in Africa (and everywhere in the world), your CV is important – it is the

gateway by which you connect with employers.

And for you to attract the employers, secure an interview, and then land the job, you must polish your CV and

make it look convincing that you are the right person for the job.

The following are the things to you should do with your CV to make it attractive to employers, on the first look.

TAILOR IT

Since your CV is your first opportunity to connect with employers, tailoring it to the specs of the employers will resonate well with the employers.

So instead of sending a CV detailing all your qualifications, skills, and experiences when applying for a position,

you should construct a CV that has information relevant to the position For example, if you have worked as a

marketer and now looking to become a skilled professional in human resource management, sending a CV that

shows how good you are as a marketer wouldn’t work.

What you should do instead, is to list only the skills and experiences that are relevant to human resource

management. You can achieve this by tailoring your CV to the required skills and experiences listed in the job

description of the role you are applying for. Using relevant industry keywords on your CV can also be very helpful.

By using these keywords, you will be speaking the language the employers are familiar with, and if your CV is

being reviewed by an applicant tracking system, you are also likely to strike a point with the system.

MAKE IT BRIEF

It is true that having to summary all your wealth of experience and qualifications in a couple of pages is easy;

however, because a CV isn’t an autobiography, you have to make it brief. For your CV to connect well with

employers, it should only contain important things like your bio-data, education, skills, and job experiences.

Including things like your hobbies and other personal interests (such as religion and political view) will add up to

the length of your CV. You should only include them if they will be of advantage to the role.

Although there isn't an agreed number of pages for the perfect CV, make sure your CV isn’t more than 3 pages

. Employers have only a few seconds to review your CV; making it longer and containing irrelevant information

wouldn’t attract employers.

APPLY CONSISTENT FORMATTING

Aside from tailoring it and making it brief, another thing you should do with your CV when you are looking to find

local jobs in Africa is to apply a good and consistent formatting to the document. When your CV is well formatted,

it will be easy to read for the reviewer, which would be able to easily spot your skills and experiences and match

them with the requirement for the position.

A good practice you should employ when formatting your CV is to apply the same font size, font type, and styling

to the same elements in your CV. For example, the headings like Career Objective, BioData, Skills, Education,

and Experience should be of the same font size, font type, and styling (Bold).

Using bullet points to list your skills and other elements under the headings will also make your CV easy to read

and more attractive to employers.

AVOID GRAMMATICAL ERRORS

When you look to connect with employers, sending them a CV full of grammatical errors would thwart your chance

of ever securing an interview. This is because your CV is your image, in the eyes of prospective employers.

So even if your CV is well-tailored, well-formatted, and brief, grammatical errors would ruin your opportunity of

getting the job.

What you should do to rid grammatical errors in your CV is to make sure you do a good proofreading before you

start using it to apply for jobs. It is also advisable to show your CV to a third party (probably a family member or a

friend) who is more grammatical sound than you. He or she can then help you with the proofreading and also

provide useful insights and feedback about your CV.

CONCLUSION

Your CV is your image when looking out to connect with employers and land your dream job in Africa (and all over

the world). Only by tailoring it, making it brief, well-formatted, and rid of grammatical errors can you secure an

interview and land your dream job.
