Thankfully, the majority of Nigerians are not that dumb, and know that leaving education to states would only increase alimanjeris.

I read the above again and laughed to myself.

The problems in Nigeria are actually because the funding of education has been left to states, though, thankfully, the curriculum hasn't or it would be much worse than it is.

In my own local government in Osun State, a secondary school has a principal and a vice principal, and all the 'teachers' are cheap federal funded untrained corpers who think sleeping with under 16s is a fringe benefit of being posted to a place so rural.

This is a consequence of states, and local governments, not properly funding the education and paying for trained teachers.

We do have private schools of course, but there is the minor issue of fees that limit those who can pay for their children to go there. And the consequence is those who can, leave to go further their study elsewhere and leave the alimanjeris behind. And today, we have a drug problem that is blighting the community, as alimanjeris can't do work.

During a press briefing in Minna, Danmaman said, “The high number of out-of-school children has significantly contributed to the increasing crime rate, especially among teenagers.”

Federal Universities in Nigeria churn out massively ignorant and unenlightened graduates that simply crammed and regurgitated textbooks or cheated their way through. Most of them in the highly desirable courses only got admitted by offering sex or money as bribes or they had nepotistic or political connections. It's not just talk, there's video evidence AND more importantly, everyone knows it from experience and observation.

That Nigeria is the Poverty Capital of the World is no surprise given the quality of Federal University education in that country.

Good Luck to Nigeria.

With due respect, I find your bolded comment very distasteful. There are lots of brilliant young Nigerian students who got into highly sought courses with hardwork, grit and sweat.

Sometimes, one talks to the average Nigerian elder and you understand why Nigeria has been economically comatose all these years.

Anyways, some things are better left unsaid.

It's always good to share knowledge. If you have any systematic analysis you can share as to why Nigeria is economically comatose, it would be good to put it out. Everyone will claim to make it through University in Nigeria by hard work, yet everyone KNOWS the corruption, cheating and nepotism is widespread and acceptable part of the culture.

The whole Nigerian schtick of using exceptionalism as a substitute for the norm is sickening. The migration argument brings it out full bore.

Comment - UK & USA are better places for Nigerians to succeed.

Nigerian Argument - but Dangote, Agboola and Don Jazzy made it in Nigeria!

Nigerians make all claims to academic achievement but there's very little they've contributed to the world that has made large scale change or improvement to human life. grin Living in Houston presented opportunities to challenge Nigerian oil & gas engineers on this. Some of the conversation is laughable, not worth reporting here. Similar to the typical Unilag or UNN educated lawyer who will claim Nigerians can own land in Nigeria.

Observers can only go by results. The outcome of Nigerian education is clear.

Black Americans were sold into slavery by Nigerians and achieved full rights of USA citizenship in 1964. They have the most wealth and highest HDI of any national group of Negroes on the planet.

Black South Africans got freedom and self rule in 1990. They're the richest and have highest HDI of Black Africans on the Continent.

Nigeria got independence in 1960 and has achieved the distinction of being the Poverty Capital of the World since snatching that honor from India in 2018. grin

Brilliant Nigerians? There's no evidence of them ever existing in the Zoo.

Good Luck to Nigeria.

No wonder we are poor. I mostly read "the government should open companies" from black Africans. Terrible statement.

That's been a common exhortation among Nigerians for ages.

Next is latching onto academic credentials as evidence of achievement. grin

Then there's the faux patriotic claim of loving Nigeria more than their own tribe.

Nigerian descent to the Poverty Capital was inevitable.

That country is a Zoo.

American liberals LOOOOOVE Sweden. Like Bernie Sanders & AOC have told us, when they say socialism, they mean the way it's practiced in Sweden, not the one in Venezuela.

In Sweden the government gives each and every child an allocation of money to choose where they want to go to school. Last I read over 55% of Swedish families use that money to put their children in PRIVATE SCHOOLS.

But Bernie Sanders & AOC and the Democrats fight tooth and nail every year to suppress private schooling in the USA. They want to be like Sweden though. Yes they do.

Mr Trump should shut down the Federal Dept of Education and send the budget DIRECTLY to each child. So we can really be like Sweden.

Good Luck to Nigeria

Americans don't know that they've thrown themselves under the bus.

Lee Yuan Kew liken the policies of Mao's regime, "as an excess of hubris and theology." Those exact words are what best describes Trump and his policies.

Take his deportation policies.

He want to deport 15-20m "illegals" whether they contribute to the economy or not. About 9m are already working, many doing the jobs Americans snub like picking fruits, or cleaning. Economist have already said the deportations would lead to severe labor shortages.

The logistics of attaining such a humongous number is monstrous. As if that wasn't enough, he wants to de-naturalize many who already have citizens.

Take a look at his trade policies which rests on tariffs. The UK's economy today is in trouble today because it turned its back on free trade with the European Union where there are zero tariffs between member states.

The pain afflicted on Britain's economy due to its exit from the EU is only a fraction of would be inflicted if Donald Trump is enacts his plan to place 65% import duty on Chinese goods, and 25% on Canada, its 51st state, and Mexico.

He said Americans won't pay for the tariffs, that it is the exporter. Not only is this completely and totally idiotic, it shows that majority of Americans are economic illiterate.

These tariffs will boost inflation, and what would the Fed do when inflation increases? It increases interest rates high enough to kill inflation. This will increase the cost of servicing personal, corporate, mortgage and public debt and might tilt the economy into a recession.

Economists have predicted that the US economy might fall by up to 8% if Trump decides to go through fully with the deportations and the tariffs in his first year.

I have lost all confidence in the world economy. Trumps policies will not only take America down, but the world's.

A long keyboard analysis of why Trump is wrong. Speculations from an elitist point of view of why everything he has proposed will not work . No different from what I hear on main stream media.
Trump has some brilliant advisors and family too . The noise is to deter him from taking any action lest it don't produce desired results. In other words , deliberate sabotage
Trump will do this, if he does that this will happen yadayadayada.
If Trump increased r
tarriffs on China to cut off supporting Russia in the Ukraine war , would that be a good thing? America stops wasting money protecting foreign borders?

Where are 500,000 missing immigrants? New York mayor wants to know.

JUST IN: NY Mayor Eric Adams stuns a room full of liberal reporters with a blunt reality check about open borders and their link to sex trafficking.

“We have 500,000 children who had sponsors in this country that we can’t find. We can’t find them. We don’t know if they’re doing child labor. We don’t know if they’re doing sex crimes. We don’t know if they’re being exploited – 500,000 children. There’s a level of hypocrisy…”

— The Vigilant Fox (@VigilantFox) December 12, 2024

Slapping tarriffs on Mexico and Canada that could potentially stop human and child sex trafficking is not good -according to the left.

No need to make it personal. The VIDEO EVIDENCE and general experience of Nigerians validate the opinion that the generality of Federal University graduates in Nigeria are IGNORANT and UNENLIGHTENED.

Ask even TOP LAWYERS in Nigeria and they will argue that individuals can own land in Nigeria, I'm talking TOP LAWYERS. Try it with any Federal Law graduate and confirm for yourself. Even here on Nairaland they insist on the LIE than individuals can own land in Nigeria.

When I was working in Nigeria I ran into at least TWO Federal University graduates that didn't know what VAT is, simply didn't know and one of them is a business graduate from University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Even Peter Obi doesn't know the meaning of free markets, this one is confirmed because I asked him in person. I later contacted a friend who talks to him to get clarification for me. After he reported back, I realized he has no idea. Really.

"Working at Shell and PWC and MTN" is just that, working....the same way they worked to earn their degrees in University.

General proof of competence for Nigerian university graduates and Nigerian elites would be the kind of society they've been able to build.

What is the result of Nigerian University EDUCATION? They've made Nigeria the Poverty Capital of the World.

Good Luck to Nigerians.

what are you even saying here? you think nigerians are not aware of the land use act and that state governors can revoke ownership of any land at will? what 'top lawyers' have you actually worked with? multinantionals have been leasing land in nigeria since the 70s precisely because they are fully aware that CofOs can be revoked at will? or what exactly are you talking about here?

one of the people who responded to your rant is a lawyer who works with ATC. American Tower Company. American tower company manages thousands of Telecoms Sites across Nigeria. one of the key roles lawyers in any large company with multiple sites are involved in is firming up of lease and sublease agreements, confirmation of actual owners of CofO, confirming land is not encumbered etc and constantly reviewing agreements. i who am not a lawyer have worked on enough projects to be fully apprised of land use and land ownership issues.

who are these 'TOP lawyers' you are working with? Top. . .Men?

When I was working in Nigeria I ran into at least TWO Federal University graduates that didn't know what VAT is, simply didn't know and one of them is a business graduate from University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

and we have seen hundreds of thousands of americans who have no idea about how tariffs work. likely you as well. so what exactly is your point here? there are multiple principles or laws you will not know or understand until you come into direct contact with them.

"Working at Shell and PWC and MTN" is just that, working....the same way they worked to earn their degrees in University.
passing through multiple interviews and aptitude tests or being head hunted is the same way they earned their degrees in the university - which as you have already stated is by bottom power and bribing their way into employment. did you even read what you just wrote at all? a person will first bribe hr to get them to the interview. then bribe the manager who will interview them - then bribe the head of department, then bribe the ceo in the final interview. i really have to wonder EXACTLY what working experience and exposure you had in nigeria .

General proof of competence for Nigerian university graduates and Nigerian elites would be the kind of society they've been able to build.
and what does that say of you then - seeing as you are a passenger in a working society and did not actually contribute to it? can we also assume the same thing about you that you say so casually,, that you are a lazy shiftless never do well who is only subsisting on the magnanimity of the glorious white man?

Even Peter Obi doesn't know the meaning of free markets, this one is confirmed because I asked him in person. I later contacted a friend who talks to him to get clarification for me. After he reported back, I realized he has no idea. Really.

what does peter obis ignorance [which has been discussed extensively on threads outside of this one] have to do with this? especially when you are shilling for donald trump who knows even less about free markets, soft power, international diplomacy etal? or is it because trump is a white man and not an ignorant nigger who rose through corruption, stealing and cheating [which incidentally, he did] ?

this is you

talking one moment about systematic analysis - and the next moment saying 'everybody knows. pick a struggle. are you about actual hard data - or are you about 'people are saying' or just vibes and

you keep on shitting on nigeria while celebrating Trump who is set to enact the same kind of policies that led to Nigeria's regression in the first place - nepotism, gutting of federal institutions, loyalty based appointments, blatant corruption , demagoguery.

some of us are alarmed because we have actual experience of the outcomes these policies and their long term effects. systems that take decades to develop can be levelled in a second, with institutional knowledge and leadership gone forever

the more you write, the clearer it is that you are really unexposed and really and truly know nothing. the best i can say about your 'work experience' in nigeria is maybe you are one of those people seconded from abroad who spent all his time in a side office isolated from any actual work and runnig of the company.

better for everyone really. since you would be unable to hide your disdain and contempt for the empty headed nigerian graduates who fked recruiters/ HOD/the ceo to get into the company.

We pay taxes hoping it will be for the common good. If paying a lil bit higher price will improve the quality of life, why not.wrt immigration and drug trafficking a lot of families have suffered Federal money is wasted on criminals, handouts to illegals and their jail upkeep.

Nairaland does not work that way. If you don't want your views to be of interest, you can try keeping them to yourself.

Thankfully, Nigeria and its federal government do not agree that the "North have a right to pursue Boko Haram or whatever ideology they wish", and make it the "business of other tribes or regions whether Northerners choose to embrace education".

Ti ara ile ẹni ba n jẹ kokoro ti ko sunwon ti a ko ba so fun; howuhowu re ko nii je ka sun l'oru. "If someone in your household is eating harmful food and you don't tell them, their cry at night will keep stop you being able to sleep at night".

If we don't make their education our business, they'd create no jobs in their region and start killing themselves due to hunger, and then migrate down to where you live and start killing you because they have not been educated to do the work that needs doing. Or what did you think the constant wailing about Fulani was all about?

You don't just concern yourself because of them, but because of what they'd end up doing to you if you don't.

i have to wonder if IbeOkehie is a fifth generation amerian. because that is how most of his takes are.

it is privilege and generational wealth that can insulate you from reality

the north ruled nigeria for decades and refused to use their access to power to properly develop the region. they did not push a culture of western education , but chose to go for basic islamic education for the masses. they did not promote family planning and they promoted overly socialist programs

today 'abokis' flood the south working odd jobs security, okada rider, labor on site
the northern middle class has been fleeing the north in droves to the south, particularly lagos
today it is unsafe for anyone, northerner or southerner to travel most road in the north

and most critically, there is now an almajiri to bandit pipeline. so nigerias security problems are with us indefinetely , because for every boko haram or bandit put down, there are 1000s more almajiri that will take their place, and thousands more are still being born everyday.

but when you are a trumpist who jumps on empty rhetoric you believe that other peoples problems will not become your problems. same way the us said ww2 was not their business until japan attacked pearl harbor.

all the lessons will have to be learned again.

As an aside - There is a limit to how far bottom power can get you, especially if you are in a role that has some technicality. I have seen this happen as well. You suddenly find yourself without the foundation required to have an understanding of what is going on and overly dependent on subordinates who may not have enough knowledge. Recipe for disaster. If you guys let republicans talk long enough they’ll show you who they truly are.

We didn’t move to America and all of a sudden decide to abandon all traditional values in place of “wokeness” like they love to insinuate.

After you’ve had a few conversations with them, you’ll quickly come to realization that if they had their way, the country you moved to will rapidly adopt the negative aspects of the country you moved away from because of the kind of policies they support.

There’s something to be said for adopting the best aspects of each system but they don’t want to hear that.

If you guys let republicans talk long enough they’ll show you who they truly are.

Honestly Coco, his comments so far on the subject issue has been mind boggling, and begs to ask if he is out of touch with reality.

The Trûmp he and his cohorts are supporting, isn't he a morally bankrupt politician? But no, they're making him seem he's the best thing after sliced bread. Mtchewww!

Welldone to you and others on the thread, Ichie Coco. wink

i have to wonder if IbeOkehie is a fifth generation amerian. because that is how most of his takes are.

it is privilege and generational wealth that can insulate you from reality

Nope. He said he started from the bottom like all of us. It’s the classic move up and forget about where you came from syndrome that’s prevalent in the conservative world.

The things they call handouts and socialism today were beneficial to them on their way up. If they truly started from the bottom, there’s no way at some point they didn’t benefit from those things. Even if on a small scale.

In the school I attended, there were grants and scholarships for students who NEEDED THE FINANCIAL AID and maintained above 3.5 out 4.0 gpa. I’m proud to say I don’t have student loans because of the generosity of the people who funded those programs. All I had to do was study hard. There’s no self made person in America.

Now that I can give back to the school to help fund up-coming students, if I were a Republican I’d call it a handout. And say their parents should have planned better.
