The Hausa community in Owerri, capital of Imo State, has cried to Governor Rochas Okorocha to shelve the plan to relocate its people from Owerri metropolis in Owerri Municipal Council Area.

The people alleged that the area that they are presently occupying is their ancestral home, adding that they had been there for over 120 years.

In an interview with Southern City News on Friday, the traditional ruler of Hausa community, Alhaji Auwal Baba-Suleiman, said the state government had not officially communicated its plans on the relocation of Ama-Hausa community to them, as it has been rumoured, but fervently appealed that the idea be jettisoned.

The traditional ruler however, pointed out that relocating them from their present abode was just like uprooting the people from their ancestral land.

Southern City News recall that Okorocha had late 2017 said that after he had demolished the Owerri ancestral market (Ekeukwu) as part of his urban renewal project, he would also relocate the Ama-Hausa community.


Baba-Suleiman said, “The rumour that the state government is planning to relocate the Ama-Hausa community is causing anxiety in the entire Hausa community. Although, we have not been officially communicated by the state government, I appeal to the state governor, His Excellency, to please shelve the plan of relocating Ama-Hausa community from Owerri.

“Our forefathers who came from Kano had settled in this area since 1898 which is over 120 years and inter-married with the natives. The Owerri people regard us as people of their sixth clan otherwise called Owerre Nchi Ishi. All the people in Ama Hausa community were all born here. Just like every Igbo man avidly cherishes his ancestral home, we love where we are presently. In fact, Ama Hausa is our village.”

Meanwhile, the traditional ruler has commended Okorocha for his urban renewal project.

He said the development has given the state a new look, especially in the areas of road construction, reconstruction and provision of infrastructure.

“We are not against Owelle’s urban renewal project. We are happy with it because it is giving the state a facelift. We are only pleading with him to leave us where we are,” he added.

They should be relocated already, if an ancestral market was relocated, why not hausa community

They should be relocated to the outskirts, they have made that area an eyesore and narrowed the road unnecessarily.
