What Is Fasting?

Fasting is a term often used when an
individual decides to abstain or reduce
the intake of food and drinks for a given
period of time.

While fasting, an individual may totally
abstain from food / drink or restrict the
type of food / drink that can be
consumed.

The duration and reason for
fasting also varies depending on
individual.


Types Of Fast

Fast can be classified into various
categories; for the purpose of the post,
we shall consider at least seven different
types of fast.


*Diagnostic Fast

This is a type of fast carried out in order
to investigate a medical problem. It
required an individual to abstain from any
food except may be water prior to
carrying out a medical test.

An example of this type of fast is carried
out when measuring the blood glucose of
a patient.


*Water Fast

This is another type of fast characterized
by total abstinence from all foods and
drinks except water.

You should however note that water is
essential for human survival; therefore, it
is not advisable to abstain from water for
a long period because it will tell on your
health within a short period.

However, water can also be obtained
from some raw fruits and vegetables like
watermelon, cucumber, citrus fruits etc;
this can serve as alternative while fasting.


*Cleansing Fast

The primary purpose of cleansing fast is
to cleanse the colon, kidney and liver to
get rid of harmful toxin using mostly
liquid drinks that may contain lemon juice,
cucumber, vinegar, water and other
cleansing vegetables and fruits.


*Partial Fast

With this type of fast, an individual is
selective in deciding what to eat for a
specific period of time.

You may decide to abstain from drinking
any other fluid except water; you may
even decide not to eat food like rice,
meat, fish, pepper or dairy products for a
specified period of time.


*Dry Fast

This is absolute abstinence from all kinds
of food and drinks for a period of time. It
could last for a day or more.

Here, an individual decides not to eat any food or
drinks till the fasting period is over.
This type of fast might not be suitable for
everyone; therefore, you should consider
your health status before starting such
fast.


*Intermittent Fast

This involves skipping certain meals on
purpose i.e. timing of food intake. It is
just a simple way of changing your eating
pattern.
There are two types:
*Time restricted eating (eating only at
specific time during the day)
*Periodic fasting (not eating for long
period of time and eating small or very
little when eating).


*Religious Fast

This is a type of fast mostly practiced for
spiritual reasons. The fast may be
modeled according to the principle of the
religion he / she believes in.

The fast may adopt any of the above
types of fast or restriction from food and
drinks for specific hours in a day; this
type of fast usually last for up to a month
or more.

There may be different factors or motives
behind every fasting process; however, we
have identified few among fasting health
benefits or reasons why people engage in
fasting:

*To lose weight
*To detoxify or cleanse vital organs of the
body
*Medical conditions
*Religious practices
*Personal reasons
