Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole, has directed the striking health workers to resume work immediately or be considered to have absconded from duty.

The minister gave the directive to Chief Medical Officers of all federal government owned hospitals late Monday night. This came as the leadership of JOHESU, said it would for a second time in the last 48 hours meet with the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, today in efforts to resolve the protracted industrial action.

The leadership had earlier met with the Senate on Monday in a bid to resolve the current impasse that has crippled activities in government health institutions in the past 43 days.

At a briefing, JOHESU President, Biobelemoye Josiah, said: “We shall be meeting with the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, again on Wednesday in continuation of our meeting with him on Monday. “JOHESU leaders are hopeful that this intervention will lead to a resolution of the strike soonest and further deliberation or discussion on all outstanding issues.”

Adewole’s riot act Meanwhile, on the resumption directive, Prof Adewole warned that anyone who failed to resume would be considered to have absconded from duty without leave, an act considered a serious misconduct in line with Public Service Rule 030413.

He insisted that everyone who participated in the strike would not be paid for the period of the strike even if the strike was called off. The minister urged chairmen of the boards of health institutions to take charge of their facilities and that any chief executive not willing to keep the services running, should be suspended and be replaced with another officer in acting capacity.

“We want you to go back and restore services in your various institutions immediately. The clinics must run, theatres must be opened. There is no reason why they should lock your theatres. No one has the right to lock up government hospitals,” the minister said.

We may resume, but… —Okara

Reacting to the minister’s directive, National Chairman, Assembly of Healthcare Professional Unions, Dr. Godswill Okara, said the health workers might be coerced to resume but that could not guarantee their commitment to duty. He said: “I am aware of the minister’s directives. We may be forced to resume duties latest by next Monday but that does not guarantee that every worker will put his heart to work and express maximum commitment to meeting the needs of the health-seeking public.

“So, the best solution to the logjam is not threat or coercion but discussions, negotiations and reconciliations. However, we hope for amicable resolution of the dispute.”

its sad this strike is largely borne out of envy, hatred and greed. please let's drop this ego and envy and work towards the greater benefit of the end users of the services rendered by health professionals.

This is NOT a military regime! Workers often go on strike in the West, and when they do, the affected parties sit to negotiate without issuing threats.

JOHESU started losing the battle when they refused to show up for meeting scheduled to discuss how to resolve the strike, they unilaterally pulled out of the meeting without sending any message to the minister and his team(if the matter gets to court, the minister has an advantage, he will simply say we called them for a meeting, but they refused to show up).
How can you say you want peace when you refused to attend meeting where peace is to be discussed?

No group/association has the right to hold the govt to ransom.

The circular says Administrative officers(those from level 15 and above) are exempted from going on strike under labour law, failure of the Admin officers to resume will mean that they absconded from duty. Under the public service rule, the penalty for absconding or going AWOL is dismissal.
Dismissal is the highest form of punishment that can be issued to a civil servant, a dismissed officer is not entitled to gratuity or pension. Now, who will be so stupid among the Admin Officer to want to risk everything he has worked for taken away from him?
Let's be watching

Useless country.. Workers are not paid, gets threatened and somehow, you people think you have democracy.
Isn't it a man's right to withold labour especially when his rights have been infringed upon.
How can you refuse to pay someone yet threaten them to go back to work.. This reminds me of slavery.

JOHESU =Association of FRUSTRATED health workers with FAILED dreams of becoming medical doctors...
I know some of them are very proud of their profession and have never wanted to be any medical doctor, but these few are being sabotaged by the majority of failed wannabes...
Both NMA and JOHESU are well represented in my family... So I know what's up.

Johesu has refused all forms of diplomatic suggestions that could have solved this impasse. If I were the minister I would have played this card since they started walking out on meetings and insisting that they are not shifting ground. If you know the number of people who have died as a result of this unreasonable strike then you'll know that they should not be pitied. The public should not be deceived, it's high time we allow people go on strike and be paid for all the time they were on stroke, it is never done. If you are on strike the cost is that you won't be paid for the period of the strike. It would stop unions including NMA from going on useless strikes.
