psychologist:@psychologist What is your source or Web link of this 1895 picture scene? Lagos (Island) folks and Yorubas did NOT move about n.aked or half-n.aked in 1895 as can be seen in the pic above. Since the early 1980s, I've seen a lot of archival pictures of Yorubas (and non-Yorubas) taken in the 1800s by the British, and Yorubas wore cloths such as agbadas on kembes (three quarter trousers) while the Yoruba women only used woven cotton wrappers round their waists and breasts. Most wore no shoes though... but there was extensive cotton weaving using looms in Yorubaland that English explorers who came to Yorubaland in the 1700s said the fabric woven was stronger than Manchester clothing! The 1800s to early 1900s pictures show that Ijaws, Ibos (wore no cloths but only covered the lower private parts with a tiny animal skin, and Ibo women of all ages did NOT cover their breasts), and the Binis (The Bini Obas and ranking chiefs wore cloths but the lower class traditionally where forbiden by law to not wear cloths). All these are in history books and the Nigerian and British archives. |
