president Muhammadu Buhari on Monday sent his condolences to the family of the first female chartered accountant in Nigeria and former President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Chief Olutoyin Olakunrin, who died on Sunday.

In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President commiserated with ICAN, while he described the deceased as a brilliant accountant and entrepreneur who served the country in many capacities, providing visionary leadership and invaluable counsel to the government.

“The President believes Chief Olakunrin lived her life in service to God and humanity, while commending her leading role in encouraging women to study and acquire skills, pursue professional careers and start generational businesses that can support their families, employ people and further strengthen the society,” the statement read.

Also, in his condolence letter to the husband of the deceased, Mr Simeon Olakunrin, SAN, former President Olusegun Obasanjo said the late Olakunrin was a tremendous help to him and that he enjoyed every of her advice and support in actualising his plans while he was the President.

He described the late Olakunrin as “ever resourceful, trustworthy and conducting herself with humility, dignity and decorum” and that her insistence on truth and accountability could not but inspire anyone close to her.

He added, “She was a dutiful and hardworking fellow, who gave her very best in the service of her fatherland.”

The Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, also in his condolence message, described the late Olakunrin as an accomplished professional, a patriotic Nigerian and a committed, true daughter of Ogun State.

The governor, in a statement signed by the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Chief Adedayo Adeneye, said, “She demonstrated her versatility as an administrator and captain of industry in her capacity as the first female president of the Institute of Directors (Nigeria), former member of the National Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Policy Commission, Vision 20:2020 Committee, and Council of the Nigerian Stock Exchange.”

Meanwhile, Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, on Monday, expressed shock and sadness over the death of Olakunrin, saying he had always admired her demeanour, being a woman of true character and quiet nobility.

Ambode, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Habib Aruna, said, “Chief Olakunrin was a woman of many firsts who paid her dues and rose to the pinnacle of her career in the corporate world. She was a pacesetter in the accounting world and her dexterity inspired both men and women in the profession.”

Also, the Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, in a statement by her Special Adviser, Media and Communications, Oluyinka Akintunde, described the late Olakunrin as her professional mother and cherished mentor, who supported and impacted positively on a generation of women chartered accountants.

In his own condolence message, former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, described the deceased as a remarkable amazon and one of the outstanding Nigerian women in recent history.

In a statement by his media aide, Ayo Giwa, Daniel said, “She stepped out of her chosen career to contribute her quota to the political development of the country when she served as a member of the Constituent Assembly that drafted the 1979 Constitution.”
