Yazid Ibn Muhawiyyah- Who Was He? by Alhajiemeritus: 8:51pm On Jun 05, 2018
In order to learn more clearly as to how far the views expressed by Imam Husayn about Yazid are indisputable according to the history of Islam, one should refer to the following remarks of Mas'udi in respect of Yazid.
"Yazid was a pleasure-seeking person. He was a man, who kept beasts of prey. He had dogs, monkeys and panthers. He always arranged wine-drinking parties. One day after the martyrdom of Imam Husayn while he was sitting in such a party, Ibn Ziyad was seated on his right side, Yazid turned to the cupbearer and recited two couplets which are translated below:
"Give me a cup of wine which should satiate my bones. Then give another such cup to Ibn Ziyad, the man who is my confidant and who has strengthened my position and the foundation of my caliphate".
Yazid meant to say that Ibn Ziyad by killing Imam Husayn had strengthened the foundation of his caliphate.
Thereafter Mas'udi writes about the injustice and oppressions committed by Yazid and then says: "In the Muslim ummah Yazid was like Pharaoh amongst his subjects" and then writes: "It is not so, because Pharaoh was more just to his subjects".
He adds: "The injustice, intrepidity and impiety of Yazid also penetrated into the Muslim ummah". The sins committed by Yazid were also committed by his favorites and they adopted his ways and manners.
During the period of his caliphate music became current in Makkah and Madina, and all sorts of amusements and funs began to be used. The people began to drink wine openly. It is also the more surprising that the man, who claimed to be the successor to the Holy Prophet and occupied the seat of the caliphate, had a pet monkey, which was named Abu Qays. Yazid used to bring it in his drinking parties and he spread a mattress for it. He also mounted it on the back of a she-ass, and made it participate in the horse-race. One day Abu Qays won the race. The monkey was then dressed in red and yellow silken clothes and cloak, and an embroidered cap was placed on its head".
This was the import of the sentence that Imam Husayn wrote to Mu'awiya about Yazid. However, this person attained to the Islamic Caliphate and pressed Imam Husayn to take the oath of allegiance i.e. to acknowledge him to be the lawful successor of his (i.e. Imam Husayn's) grandfather, the Prophet of Allah.

AlBaqir:
The commander-in-chief of the Killers was Yazid ibn Mu'awiyah, the son of a Sahabi

Before the death of Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan, he compelled virtually all the Muslims to pay allegiance to his son as his Successor to the seat of Khilafah. Yazeed ibn Mu'awiyah was never known to be Muslim. Imam Suyuti in his esteemed Tarikh Khulafa documents:

The Incident Of Al-Harrah

As-Suyuti writes:

Nawfl bin Abi Furaat said that once he was sitting with Caliph Umar bin Abdul Aziz when a man called Yazid as, "Amir ul Mo'mineen Yazid bin Mu'awiyah." At this, (Umar bin Abdul Aziz said in anger): "You call this person as Amir ul Mo'mineen?!'

And then he ordered that person to be "lashed 20 times."

In 63 A.H, Yazid was informed that people of Madinah have rejected him and are preparing to wage war upon him. Knowing this, Yazid sent a huge army to Madinah and declared war upon the people of Madinah. After looting Madinah, he sent the army to fight Abdullah bin Zubayr in Makkah and so the incident of Harrah took place.

Do you know what Harrah is? Regarding it, Hassan (Al-Basri, a Tabi'i) said: "By Allah (swt)! When Madinah was attacked, there remained not a single person who was safe from it, a group of Sahaba and others were killed and Madinah was looted and thousands of virgin girls were raped."

Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Raji'oon...The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: "Whosoever frightens People of Madinah, then Allah (swt) will frighten them (the attackers) plus Curse (La'nah) of Allah (swt), his Angels and all the people is upon such a person (Saheeh Muslim). The reason why people of Madinah did not give bayah to Yazid was because he was indulged in "too many sins."

Imam Waqidi narrates from Abdullah bin Hanzala son of Al-Ghasil (a companion) that he said: "By Allah (swt)! We did not revolt against Yazid until we feared that, "WE WILL BE SHOWERED WITH STONES FROM SKY." He was a man who used to penetrate his mothers (his father's wives), sisters and daughters, and he used to drink openly and neglected prayers!"

Imam Dhahabi said: When Yazid did such things with people of Madinah although "he was indulging in drinking and other evil deeds even before," then the people of Makkah also revolted against him and rose against him from 4 sides, and then Allah (swt) did not put Barakah in life of Yazid and then the army of Harrah went to Makkah to fight ibn Al-Zubayr. Then the commander of the army died on the way, then someone else succeeded him and and then they went to Makkah and surrounded ibn Al-Zubayr and fought with him and threw on them fireballs with catapults, and that happened in the month Safar of the year 64 A.H, and as a result, their fire covered the Kaaba, its roof and the horn of the goat which was sacrificed for Isma'eel which was on the roof all burned down. Then Allah (swt) destroyed Yazid in the middle of the month Rabi'ul Awwal of that year, and the news of his death came to Makkah when the fight was still going on. Then ibn Zubayr announced: "O people of Shaam, your tyrant died!" They were disturbed and people arrested them. Then ibn Al-Zubayr called people to pay him allegiance and called himself Caliph, and the people of Shaam paid allegiance to Mu'awiyah, son of Yazid, but his reign was not so long as it will be mentioned later.

The icing on the cake of Yazeed's sinful act was the blood of al-Hussein ibn Ali (alaih Salam).

AlBaqir:

# Imam al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir writes:

Traditions inform us that Yazeed loved worldly vices, would drink, listen to music, kept the company of boys with no facial hair [civil expression for paedophilia with boys, a form of homosexuality], played drums, kept dogs [civil expression for bestiality], making frogs, bears and monkeys fight. Every morning he would be intoxicated and would bind monkeys to a horse saddle and make the horse run”.

NB: This graphical illustration is given by Abdullah Ibn Hanzallah (Gazilul Malaika, who was a Sahabi).

# Imam al-Dhahabi also writes:

Ziyad Haarthi narrated: ‘Yazeed gave me alcohol to drink, I had never drunk alcohol like that before and I enquired where he had obtained its ingredients from’. Yazeed replied: ‘it is made of sweet pomegranate, Isfahan’s honey, Hawaz’s sugar, Taif’s grapes and Burdah’s water’. Ahmed bin Masama’ narrated: ‘Once Yazeed drank alcohol and started to dance, suddenly he fell down and his nostril began to bleed’.

After citing the above cited traditions, Imam Dhahabi then gave his own verdict regarding Yazeed that has also been recorded by Allamah Ibn al-Emaad al-Hanbali (d. 1089 H) in “Shadharat al Dhahab” Volume 1 page 69:

Al-Dhahabi said about him (Yazeed) that he was Nasibi (one who hate Prophet’s family), rude, harsh, would drink alcohol and committed evil deeds. He commenced his reign by killing al-Hussain (Prophet’s grandson) and concluded it with the battle of al-Hara (where Makkah and Madinah were destroyed, including Kaaba), so the people hated him and Allah didn’t bless his life

NB: I have posted the account on battle of al-Harra above.

# Ibn Kathir summarised the Khulafah of Banu Umayyad as Nasibiyyun:

The Khalifas from Banu Umayyah were like this … ALL OF THEM were Nasibis, except Imam ‘Umar the Pious: Mu’awiyah, then his son Yazid, then his grandson Mu’awiyah al-Sadid; Marwan, then his son ‘Abd Al-Malik ….

But, why do some people still refer to Yazid as Rodiyalahu anihu and a pious Sahaba?
Because I don't understand why someone who committed such atrocities should be prayed for?

Yazeed is one of those whom we neither curse nor love. There are others like him among the khaleefahs of the two states (Umawi/Umayyad and ‘Abbaasi/Abbasid) and the governors of various regions, indeed there were some among them who were worse than him. But the issue in the case of Yazeed is that he was came to power forty-nine years after the death of the Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him); it was still close to the time of the Prophet and some of the Sahaabah were still alive such as Ibn ‘Umar who was more entitled to the position than him or his father or his grandfather.

His reign began with the killing of the martyr al-Husayn and it ended with the battle of al-Harrah, so the people hated him and he was not blessed with a long life. There were many revolts against him after al-Husayn, such as the people of Madeenah who revolted for the sake of Allaah, and Ibn al-Zubayr.

(Siyar A’laam al-Nubalaa’, part 4, p. 38)

Shaykh al-Islam described people’s attitudes towards Yazeed ibn Mu’aawiyah, and said:

The people differed concerning Yazeed ibn Mu’aawiyah ibn Abi Sufyaan, splitting into three groups, two extreme and one moderate.

Fact is, he was gravely wrong. If his faith in the open was Islam and he did not openly renounced Islam till his death, he still has the right as Muslim to certain extent.

This was someone who killed the grandson of the prophet (saw), obviously, from that perspective, Allah will pronunce curses on such fellow. He didn't just kill ordinary human.

So my position is, amongst us muslims, the respect he gets is just for being muslim. It is optional to pray for him. But I won't support raining curses on him every time his name is mentioned. That's reserved for shaytan. But if someone wants to curse him occasionally, they can go ahead. He was not a potential sahabi. He was a wicked tyrannical ruler.

Anyway, Sunni do not really count Yazid ibn Mu'awiyah as a sahabi. Besides, there is an aqeedah founded by Ahmad ibn Hanbal called "Athariyyah". They held the believe that ALL the sahabah were righteous no matter the crime they might have committed.

Yazid and his father Muawiyah (who was a sahabi) were full blown hererics. But somehow, the salafis are trying to buy status and virtues for them at all cost in the bid of countering Shia who maintained that there were evil ones amongst the sahabah.

Your position and that of the deceitful islamqa website is gravely wrong. It's a way of distorting truth.

Surah An-Nisa, Verse 93:

"And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his punishment is hell; he shall abide in it, and Allah will send His wrath on him and curse him and prepare for him a painful chastisement"

The Prophet, peace be upon him, looked towards ‘Ali, Fatimah, al-Hasan and al-Husayn, and said: “I am at war with whosoever is at war with you people, and at peace with whosoever is at peace with you people”

Apart from Yazid (la), there were sahabah and sons of sahabah involved directly and indirectly in murdering the household of the Prophet; also in the story of Harra where makkah and Madina were plundered, kaaba destroyed, women raped, young and old murdered. Yet, you are maintaining NEUTRALITY

interesting. Like I never read the Ayah before. Well, there are difference of opinion about a Muslim who kills fellow muslim intentionally. That, as long as the person is muslim, possibilities exist that he will not abide in hell forever because the only sin that will not be forgiven is shirk.

Only ibn Abass(ra) had different opinion. He maintained the Ayah as it is. But other scholars differ. They said if such killer makes tawbah before he dies he may be forgiven. Anyways, Yazidi is in big trouble for real unless Allah forgives him. And Allah can do that.

Overall, he had bad record. Yes, there are other leaders who did worst than Yazidi.
