think everyone got caught up the buying price. The problem is maintenance and fuel. Honestly, with your budget, I do not recommend getting a car right now because even when you get a used in your budget, it will require more maintenance which you can't afford. I feel for your wife but what point is driving it until the first oil change or breakdown?

An oil change alone is at least 10% of your stated monthly income. Not to talk of fuel. To really know if you can afford it, go look at local parts shops and mechanics for the cost and labor of the following items for the specific car you are considering should you need them. If you can afford it in a pinch, buy. If not, wait.

1) brake replacement
2) a new tire
3) oil change with proper oil or you will blow your engine quickly
4) a new battery
5) alternator
6) radiator
7) 4 spark plugs

If you can afford all of these should something happen, buy a car. These are the most common things that will prevent you from being able to use your car at all.

Kashif:
OP, It won't be easy to own a car as a family of three that earn 110k/month. Rent, feeding, medicals, school fees, utility, extended family etc, are there too.

Cost of automobile ownership is not all about fuel and servicing. Be aware of engine and transmission cost as anything can happen. To avoid costly repairs, you must give it sublime care, which won't be cheap.
Also remember you will need to replace tyres at some point.

Not discouraging you, just trying to expand your awareness. Best of luck.

Your choice of car is not bad though.

Dude only say what you know.
I have a Primera i got for lesser than that price u posted above. More than a year now, it's always on the road as i enjoy driving and even trust it's reliability even more than my camry. AC chills too wink

Only minor repairs that costs me almost nothing. (Mind you, most of these minor repairs can be negleted but i am a person that always love everything in shape, even to the smallest dent) No major repairs. Even my mechanic, as well as passengers always talk about how smooth the car is.

Your money doesn't actually matter. U can buy a Lemon for 1Million naira, at the same time u can get a sound vehicle for just 350k. Just pray, go with a competent mechanic and use your head when checking and acquiring the car. Take things easy and dont rush. You ll be ok
I actually monitored my own seller with the car for some months before i decided to check it out. lol.

OP. Am so sure you ll be good with Nissan products. Sunny, Almera, Primera and the likes. But make sure u get a good one, the cars are easy to maintain, but when thwy get abused, you can easily tell.

Golf 3 is a good ride too, personally am not a fan cos of the look and the engine noise plus AC overheating

Civic is ok. But when a used Honda starts getting old, it starts looking funny, as if the car is kinda laughing grin while others just look so tired, Even body frames and/or panel beating doesnt seem to help.

If you step up your budget just a lil' bit, you can get a Toyota corolla 2001 (Auto). I trust the ride very much too.

How many times I call u?
Owning a car is good BT maintainance is d koko. rememeber ur pikin won't still be 9months old in 5 yrs time. Prolly u may even have had one or 2 additions. That means more responsibilities. Is/will ur income increase proportionately as ur responsibilities?

Car acquisition can either be an asset or a liability.... depending on its dividend.
If that car yield side income for u by using it as uber/taxi etc, (like i suspect its doing for temmy as underlined above) then its an asset, but if it doent bring anything to d table but to drain ur finances (and taking ur take home pay plus ur wife's) into consideration, its a liability.

**Think of how to turnover ur income. Look 4 a way/biz that can fetch u extra dough by d side.

**Learn to delay gratification.
u can always buy car at any time. what's d purpose of buying car now and still be living below ur expectations? Or riding a car now and due to some unforseen circumstances walk on foot in d future ( God forbid).....stuffs happen u know. Lolz, d same ppl u were trying to impress will yimu at u.

Turnover that income and u'll even buy a a new car!

FYI, I earn MORE than u with FAR LESS responsibilities yet I don't see d reason to own a car (for now) cos I know it will be more of a liability for me based on my present income.

Rather I'm searching for ways to multiply it. Cars will come later.

CONCLUSION: If u really need DT car to further ur business, then go ahead, but if u need it just to 'feel among' .......and considering ur present income? hmmmm

Yes you are right with your conclusion, but to own a car as family man should not be seen as luxury but necessity only if there is capability to manage and maintain it. because it will be a shameful thing to park your a car as a result of minor fault that you can't afford to fix immediately.

Noted bro, at this point of my life, I see doing things to 'feel among' like u put it as childish n being unrealistic. Of course I know my capacity (my basic 110/month n d side hustle I do). It is in d quest of doing things within my capacity I'm asking for better options(if there are). There's a need that's why. Outgrown the stage of trying to impress humans. Tnx.

My brother, you have tried.
We all have our different mentalities.
Some people believe what you earn is not enough to own a car. As if everyone out there who drives one are millionaires.

I know of a family who goes around boarding a bike with 3 kids, the husband earns close to 100k. Ask him why he wouldn't get a small car so he can transport his family instead, he will tell u cars are expensive to maintain and he can't afford such expense.

Some, their problem is.... trying to feel among or Biting more than they can chew.

A man who Probably earns 40k, gets a car loan from his work place, wants to acquire and maintain a VENZA.

A man who's income is unstable decides to go for a Lexus RX330 that swallows fuel like say tomorrow no go come.

A man with a low income who has got so many mouth to feed, goes ahead to buy a car that one of its tyres costs 80k..

Someone who doesn't know anything about cars, someone who couldn't make a proper research or someone with greediness decided to get a shiny box of wahala just because it was so cheap

Those are the kinds of people that complains about cars mostly. They will make you believe having a car is the worst nightmare that can ever happen to human or tell you it's a liability.

If every man can follow their own path and stop doing stuffs to impress others, life will have been a better place.
You will see people who's class and income and family setting only permits them to own a Golf 2 or Nissan Micra, they ll go ahead and buy a Camry just like everyone else around them and at the end, they keep complaining bitterly. You ll begin to wonder in your own mind, na so e dey difficult to maintain vehicle ni. The answer is No.

Negligence on the other hand is killing some people, for instance you know your radiator hose leaks, it will only cost u few bucks to change the pipe or seal it, but u looked the other way and kept topping water till the thing got worse and go empty, you probably ended up with a bursted radiator or maybe gasket got damaged, car breaks down and money to repair is on the high side. You begin to curse the vehicle, tell me whose fault?

Some people know a particular model of vehicle has a common issue, still go ahead to get one.

It is very easy to maintain a vehicle only if you go with what you can handle and not be like someone else. After all, a golf 2 and a Range Rover Sport will move on the same road, they buy fuel at the same station and will get to their specific destination even if the SUV will get there first. Rain no go beat any of them.

My car brake pad cost 2k, yours costs 50k, it doesn't guarantee a safe trip.

My engine is 1.4 with 90HP, yours is v10 with 1000 horsepower, i know you wont fly. Even me never finish my speedometer self

The day you know how important a Volkswagen beetle owner is will be when good rain falls and you are busy walking along the road especially when you have a family.

Be yourself bro. Get a sound vehicle that you can handle preferably a basic ride to start with. You will never regret it.

For those who wants to belong, A car is a liability! For those who actually know it's worth, it is a Necessity!!

FYI, I earn MORE than u with FAR LESS responsibilities yet I don't see d reason to own a car (for now) cos I know it will be more of a liability for me based on my present income.

Its nobody's business if u earn more than the OP actually. Your not seeing reasons to own a car now is your personal resolve. The OP isnt a kid, this is a married man who needs a decent ride to ease movement for his family.

Good evening my brothers and sisters. I am a family man with a wife and a daughter and I need a small fairly used car that is easy to maintain. A car that has fuel economy, whose parts are available and affordable in order to ease family mobility as my wife's workplace is quite a distance from the house. Also, the stress of my wife carrying my child to work via buses n keke breaks my heart. Although we are looking at 2002 Honda civic, heard it fits my criteria so well. Pls, I need your advice on that too. My budget is 450k to 500k. GOD bless us all.
wish u the best.

So much sense in a post. I salute u sir.

Its all about financial intelligence bruv.
*What are ur future plans/goals?

*What plans do u have for retirement?

*Is ur present income enough to take care of ur present needs?

*Do u have a healthy saving culture?

*Can ur savings sustain the family for the next 6 months in case of job loss or u'll enter one chance as a result?

*Can ur present income take care of ur (increasing) needs in ten years time?

Ones "mentality" depends on ones goals. If one is OK with the (present) comfort necessities like a car provides, then fine. Conversely, if u know u have not reached ur zenith and u feel know dt owning a car (at the present moment) doesnt align with the fulfilment of ones goals, then do d needful.

We all have different goals. A man may earn #100k and he feels he has 'blow' and next tin is to look 4 accommodation in a highbrow area whereas another fellow on #200k, based on his outlined goals, feels he's just starting. He cautiously looks for ways to multiply that sum and of it means he has to rent a one room apartment (face_me_i_face_u) in AJ city, so be it.
Last week d story of olawle -a mtn project fame winner- came up on nairaland:

https://www.nairaland.com/4717069/olawale-ojo-now-cab-driver?_e_pi_=7%2CPAGE_ID10%2C3397073029
With a #5million + SUV car prize as winner and 5 years down the line, he's down the ladder. In just 5 years, #5 million disappeared! I'm sure in his wilest dreams he won't have bargained for this.
Everything is all about Financial Intelligence ......Let that money (#110k) make more money for u.
#multiple streams of income.

Someone once said: "believe (strongly) in sth, even if it means sacrificing everything".

*What do u believe (strongly) in?
*What are ur goals?
*what do I want to be/become?
*Do ur decisions align with ur goals?
*what are u ready to sacrifice in the attainment of ur goals?
#the bigger picture
tnx
