The Inspector-General of Police has approved the request of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to commence an independent audit of detention cells in all police commands and formations in Nigeria including those of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

These visits will enable the NHRC oversee the human rights situation of detainees as well as undertake general audit of the state of Police detention facilities (cells) in the country. This exercise is part of the NHRC 2018 audit of police detention centers in Nigeria.

In reality, the NHRC doesn't have the required tools to conduct an independent audit of the entire police detention and correctional facilities across the country. what is expected of NHRC is to audit a select few cells to be recommended by the police. The NPF won't allow the Commission to visit SARS cells especially SARS Awkuzu,Anambra State. The latter is worst than hell. Briefly let me explain: Suspects in detention are shot and allowed to bleed to death. There is a well known fact that this proposed audit and its report can not improve the living conditions of detainees roting away in hell cell.

The visit would have been an impromptu arrangement to uncover the atrocities going on in SARS cells. With this information they will prepare for their coming.
