Orient Education reports that the items presented to the students included laptops, plasma television sets, industrial fans, school bags containing assorted books and cash prize of N35,000 each for their WAEC, NECO and JAMB registration.

The champions of the competition included; Ifeanyi Chika, Ebere Ubanwanne and Ifunanya Olisakwe from Anglican Girls’ Secondary School, Nnewi.

Second position went to Nweke Chiamaka, Okeke Bernadine and Nwaka Chikaodinaka of Girls’ Secondary School, Igboukwu while Stephen Kalu, Chinonye Anekwe and Jennifer Ilochukwu from Community Secondary School, Umuoba-Anam in Otuocha zone came third.

The quiz competition, aimed at curbing illicit drug abuse in the state, was sponsored by the traditional ruler of Ogidi, Igwe Alex Oyido who instituted the award in honour of his mother, Lady Victoria Oyido.

The overall best school, Anglican Girl’s Secondary School, Nnewi was also presented with a brand new band while the student’s teachers smiled home with cash ranging from N10 to N20,000, respectively.

Presenting the items, the NDLEA Commander in Anambra state, Mr. Sule Momodu, expressed satisfaction that the competition has helped in illicit drug abuse reduction in post primary schools, commending the Anambra state government for approving the establishment of Drug Free club in schools.

Momodu expressed displeasure at the non-compliance of some school authorities in showing interest in the competition, warning that the NDLEA would withdraw if schools and the Post Primary School Service Commission (PPSSC) continue to demonstrate lack of interest in the competition.

The Anambra state governor, Chief Willie Obiano, represented by his Special Adviser on Special Duties and Continuous Voter Education, Dr. Amaka Akudo, restated the commitment of his administration in providing quality education that is globally competitive to the students, urging them to shun anti-social vices such as illicit drug abuse that could endanger their future.

Earlier in a remark, the sponsor of the programme, Igwe Oyido said his major interest was to help NDLEA in the fight against illicit drug abuse, which is rampant among the students.

Onyido, represented by Dr. Ifenna Oyido, congratulated the winners and enjoined other schools who have not participated in the competition to join in subsequent years in their own interest.
