England captain Rio Ferdinand could be ruled out of the World Cup after suffering a knee injury in training.

The 31-year-old centre-back had a scan after hurting his left knee following a challenge with Emile Heskey during Friday's first training session.

He is getting a second opinion but a Football Association source has told the BBC "it's not looking good".

The FA is due to confirm the seriousness of Ferdinand's injury later and make a statement.

Ferdinand emerged from hospital on crutches and Tottenham's Michael Dawson, who has been put on standby, could fly to South Africa in the next 12 hours.

If Ferdinand is ruled out, Steven Gerrard will step into the captain's role to lead the side at the World Cup.

Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba's participation in the World Cup is in serious doubt after he suffered a suspected fractured elbow.

The Chelsea striker, 32, picked up the injury 16 minutes into his side's 2-0 friendly win over Japan after clashing with defender Marcus Tulio Tanaka.

But coach Sven-Goran Eriksson said there was still a chance the talismanic Drogba could feature in South Africa.

"We are not sure yet, we think it's still a possibility," he said.

"It's an elbow injury. How bad it is, I don't know. He had a lot of pain. Of course I'm worried. He's captain and one of the world's best players."

Years ago, I was deemed unfit to play in a big soccer match due to what the medical community at the time called a "tummy ache," likely caused by an ill-advised gorging of mint chocolate chip ice cream too close to game time.

Now it looks like anyone whose already submitted their World Cup pool picks will have that same horrid gut rot, with today's news that the Ivory Coast's Didier Drogba and England's Rio Ferdinand will both likely miss the big party in South Africa due to a broken arm and knackered knee, respectively.

Drogba, the prolific striker picked by many to lead the tourney in goals, fractured his right arm during Ivory Coast's final warm-up match versus Japan. While it's not 100% that Drogba will not play at all, Ivory Coast manager Sven Goran Eriksson told the Associated Press, presumably while dousing his team's hopes in gasoline, "Of course I'm worried."

England captain Ferdinand, meanwhile, is said to be out for sure. The 31-year-old Manchester United veteran hurt his knee in a training session earlier today. No stranger to injury, Ferdinand was held to only 12 Premeir League starts this season due to a back problem. Not to worry England fans! As a Tottenham supporter, I assure you that Michael Dawson will be a GIANT out there as Ferdinand's replacement.
