Being a leader is not an easy task as you have to be conscious of all your actions including the words you use. Whether you lead a small team of people or an entire workforce in an Organization, the words you use really matters a lot. In fact, a statement you make jokingly can stick with an employee for a long time. Therefore, we will be discussing the toxic phrases leaders should not use.

Without an iota of doubt, many people in management positions got there not because of their natural ability to lead others effectively. But based on individual job performance or tenure in the organization.

As a result of the foregoing, most managers don’t have the acumen to inspire and motivate their people. Rather they use toxic words that will demotivate their employees.

Although actions speak louder than voice, but using the wrong words can demoralize an employee.

This is one of the toxic phrases leaders should not use. Such phrase makes your team to feel that you don’t believe in them.

However, great leaders that place their subordinates first, never use such phrases. They will always want to get opinion from several angles and make a very good decision.

#2. I am not Responsible for that. Go blame someone else
Good leaders are those that always take responsibility of the team’s action. When glory comes, they all share in it, but when things go sour, they accept responsibility.

With such attitude, your subordinates will be motivated to perform better.

#3. I don’t need to get trained, I know it all

Nothing is as irritating as leaders that believe they know it all. In fact, they don’t take correction, let alone learning how to become better leaders. They are myopic in their thinking and can’t even look at things beyond their nose.

However, good leaders take correction and are willing to learn from their team members. This is what makes your subordinates see you are a hero.

#4 That Is Why I hired you, figure it out yourself

This is among the toxic phrases leaders should not use. Yes, we hire smart and creative people for different roles. But when a subordinate comes to you for guidance, great leaders coach them for success.

As a matter of fact, when your subordinate comes to you for guidance, it means that they have trust in your ability. So, don’t mess it up by turning them down with your toxic phrases.

This is also among the toxic phrases leaders should not use. Some bosses are so egoistic that once they present an issue, it is final. They don’t give room for further discussion. This is what experts refer to as corporate tyranny. It is a sign of intellectual weakness and mental laziness.

However, great leaders always give room for deeper conversation. This will enable them to explore solutions, new ideas and above all solve problem together.
