Almost one month after the Federal Government flagged off the rehabilitation/reconstruction of N20.8 billion Ikorodu-Shagamu road, a 30.1 kilometre highway linking Lagos and Ogun states to other parts of the country, the contractor, Messrs Arab Contractors, has moved away its equipment from the project’s site, New Telegraph has learnt.

According to findings, the contractor, which had earlier mobilised equipment to site a day before the road’s reconstruction flag-off and commenced palliative works at the Lagos end on the day of its inauguration, has moved its tools away from the project’s site. When contacted also, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Mr. Adedamola Kuti, told New Telegraph that the service provider, Messrs Arab Contractors, was still searching for a construction yard to carry out its operation along the axis.

“You know the contractor needs to get its own yard for the project’s execution proper. The location it assembled equipment on the day of the flag-off ceremony belonged to somebody else, so it cannot operate from there,” he said.

When New Telegraph contacted the Federal Controller of Works in Ogun State, Mr. Kayode Popoola, on his mobile phone, he said that only his counterpart from the Lagos State could comment on the development since the flag-off of the road’s rehabilitation took place in Lagos.

According to him, the contractor has just informed that it has secured a land suitable for construction yard and was trying to perfect the agreement with the owner.

He said the flag-off was a ceremonial event to commence the road reconstruction.

Besides, Kuti said the contractor was also perfecting its payment account in Abuja, assuring that once that is done, the road’s rehabilitation and construction would commence.

One of the residents within Ogijo neighbourhood, Mr. Ayotunde Onabanjo, told our correspondent that Arab Contractor moved all its equipment away from the site immediately after the flag-off ceremony when everybody had expected it to intensify the road’s palliative work before major reconstruction to ease vehicular movement. He stated that many residents plying the road on a daily basis have been lamenting the sorry state of the road.
He stated: “The thought of some residents I boarded public transport with this morning was that the Federal Government has come to deceive them.
“Even some churches that were mobilizing resources to embark on partial palliative work of the road have stopped immediately the Federal Government flagged off the rehabilitation of the highway. The road is worse now.”The Federal Government had officially flagged off the rehabilitation of the dilapidated Ikorodu-Sagamu road on May 21, 2018, drawing a massive applause from residents and other motorists who regularly ply the route.

The flag-off ceremony, which held in Ikorodu, Lagos had in attendance leading stakeholders, including the Minister of Power, Works, and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola.

Speaking at the event, Fashola said: “The Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting of Wednesday, March 28, 2018 awarded the contract for the full rehabilitation of Ikorodu–Sagamu Road, which passes through Odogunyan–Ogijo– Likosi–Mosimi–Sotubo before terminating at Sagamu in Ogun State at the cost of N20,845,338,248.20 to Messrs Arab Contractors O.A.O. Nigeria Ltd with a contract period of 36 months.

“It should be emphasized that the scope of work involves the full reconstruction of the road, which hitherto has been in a very poor condition and requires urgent intervention.”

This is Nigeria. They have used the strategy again. They have used that place to launch campaign. Ashafa too was there and they moved next day. Those that never stayed near that place will keep arguing that they saw the inauguration. They have also stopped Ishawo-Agric because no contractor on site. Anyway, this is Nigeria. Anything goes.
