Killings: Without state police, we risk more attacks, says Ekweremadu - Punch
Mon, 02 Jul 2018
The Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, has taken the campaign for restructuring to the United States of America.

To give fillip to this, Ekweremadu is set to sponsor a bill to decentralise Nigeria’s policing system.
This, he said, was in response to the rising insecurity in the country, particularly the killing of over 100 people in 11 villages in Plateau State by armed Fulani herders.

This has led to a public outcry with prominent Nigerians including the Senate President, Bukola Satraki calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to sack all the security chiefs for their alleged inability to secure the country and arrest perpetrators of killings across the country particularly Fulani herdsmen. Plateau: 10 die, four suspects held as gunmen strike again - The Nation
Mon, 02 Jul 2018

No fewer than 10 perons died at the weekend in two attacks in Plateau State.

The attacks in Mangu and Barkin Ladi local governments have forced the special military task force Operation Safe Haven to move its headquarters to Barkin Ladi to end the killings.
Six persons died in the Saturday night attack in Mangu. Four died early yesterday in the Barkin Ladi incident.

The attacks followed those of June 23 when scores died.

Confirming the continuous killings despite the curfew and heavy military presence, the media officer of the task force, Major Adam Umar, said: “The OPSH notes with dismay the continued attitude of some criminals in the state that are bent on making the state ungovernable through some unwarranted attacks on some communities and innocent villagers despite the tireless efforts of the task force. Despite Curfew, Gunmen Kill Six in Fresh Plateau Attack - Thisday
Mon, 02 Jul 2018

In spite of the dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed on Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, six persons were in the early hours of Sundayreportedly killed in an early morning attack on Rahwol-Fwi village, a community in Fan District.

The fresh attack underscored the inability of the security forces to restrain the wanton killing of citizens, particularly in the Northern parts of the country by bandits, a situation that would attract a full scale debate in the Senate Tuesday even as a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Ghali Na’Abba, and the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Archbishop Mathew Kukah, censored the federal government for its failure to contain the incessant mass slaughter.

The fresh attack, which an eyewitness said lasted for almost an hour before the intervention of the military, also had a Baptist Church, its pastorium, Government Hospital and 17 houses burnt.

Confirming the attack, the spokesman of the military Special Task Force (STF), Major Umar Adams, however, said only four persons died, adding that more personnel had been deployed in the community.Continue reading

AMCON Bares Fangs, Closes In On N5.4trn Debtors’ Assets - Leadership
Mon, 02 Jul 2018

The Assets Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) declared yesterday that it is set for a new stage that has to do with complete take-over of the N5.4 trillion assets belonging to debtors, saying the debts have lingered for too long. The company said there would be no more room for negotiation with debtors because it is tired of obligors (debtors) coming to its office and telling lies about wanting to embark on a staggered payment, which they end up never paying. Managing director and chief executive officer of AMCON, Mr Ahmed Kuru, who announced the position of the company in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja regretted that in the seven years of its operation, the company has only been able to recover N700 billion. Noting that there was still a debt portfolio of N5.4 trillion pending with chronic debtors, he said most part of the N5.4 trillion has been with the banks for five years before AMCON bought them over.  Continue reading
