Maybe the 1million is for those who don't pay community levy of like N500 a year so when they die the family of such person is task 1m as deterrent to others to encourage community development.

But after spending years in Lagos and die they come home, when ask for community receipt they can't present, then they come to nairaland to post.

"community want us to pay 1million before we can buried our person"

Who is fooling who?
Community receipt ke? Is it something thrift society or something. Why would a community levy its people when it is not tax? Why would bereaved families be asked to pay N1m as deterrent when they are burying the dead on their very own properties? Why do these monies go to? Is this backed up by the law?

We are not only docile as a people towards the government, but even towards ourselves. This is fraud at best.

Lies from the pit of hell!!! The long standing rule in Eziowelle is that you should bury your dead without giving any living being food or drink of any kind. But if you must give food or drink then you have to pay a fine

Someone with a factual contribution. I wonder where these peddlers of fake news derive their lies from. On a second thought, maybe the quest to make FP on Nairaland is their driving force. To what end? ? Adim baffled.

As far as I know, igbos mostly bury their loved ones in the personal compound. Hardly do they use cemeteries and community lands. In fact, it's a thing of shame to do otherwise.
Now, the question is, what business or what contributions do these community groups bring to the bereaved family?
In my opinion, the worst the could do is to boycott the burial if the deceased had been ignoring them while he was alive, leaving in "Lagos." It should be that simple and civil, nobody desired to be intimidated.
Burial shouldn't be a community issue. The family should be allowed to conduct all activities within the ambit of the law. Only those that are invited should be concerned and any other uninvited persons should be seen as intruder.
Enough of these uncultured and uncivil behaviors.
Too much sense in one post.

So this is how this people plan to run Biafra? South Sudan is a case study, they’ve never known peace since breaking away from the Muslim dominated north. A Nigeria needs is responsible leadership at all level of government. Please before crucifying me, I’m full blooded Igbo and love the Igbo race.

What of d admin that put this incredulous story on frontage?
I mean,if they said 20k,a foolish person might believe it.
So the mod that put it on front page actually believed that all d poor families, families of ppl that died young and prematurely will pay 1m b4 burial?
Tells a lot about the tribal slant and d calibre of ppl running this site.

I hope you will remember to cry out for balanced journalism and proper and due research when news about others comes up.

As the saying goes, no one wants the sword to be wielded over one's head

... So many slowpokes on Nairaland these days.

Nowadays, it is easy to put up any nonsense on social media and people will run with it.

Whatever happened to balanced journalism? Well, the blogger isn't even a journalist, so I am not surprised.

For many who care to listen, Igbo communities are governed by selected, elected or appointed leaders who are usually representatives of various clans/villages that make up a of a community. No one makes decision especially sensitive issues as this on behalf of others. Matters are deliberated at town meetings in DEMOCRATIC setting wherein everyone (whether rich or poor) make his/her contribution. At the end, resolutions are made.

[quote author=dokiOloye post=69051568]Obvious lie.
Bloggers, make una fear God naa.
I'm not from Anambra but I know a lot of measures have been put in place geared at cutting costs during burials.
For example,in some communities, there's a threat of the priest not officiating d funeral mass if you don't bury your dead within a month abi 2 weeks sef.
In most communities, there's no longer an all night wake keep, wake keeps end b/w 8-10pm.Failure to comply,a fine will be imposed.
Many communities have also banned cooking and sharing of food and alcohol during burials, just a crate of mineral/malt to d different groups,if any group want to eat, they cook and bring at no cost to d family of d deceased.

Bro dont mind them in Anambrastate town union and churchs have burial rule if you go contrary to the rules it attrect big fine insted of rich people to obey common rule they always chose to pay the fine and go contrary to the rules

. Cutting cost during burial? Men I am an Igbo man, but that's too bad and uncivilized na. Even to be buried on your own land sef, you go still pay for burial level again, that's extortion na.

Wonders!
One million Naira levy for what exactly?
Would make impact if same community can demand one million Naira levy for job creating ventures to benefit youths, and scholarships too.
...this is the biggest joke ave read my entire life and the wheat lies av heard any one alive say to listening people.. eziollewe is the town in anambra that everyone wants to emulate thier laws. burial in that town is approximately 50k. no cooking is allowd.,no music is allowed to be played. only biscuits, garden egg, and groundnuts are allowed. wake keep is banned. infact u can't beat the cheapness of burial in that town. infact,u are fined the sum of 50k if u choose to raise the level of the burial cost. however, what charges is ur accumulated development union fee. for age grade which doesn't concern the towns leadership, just ur own age grade and also a n accumulated compulsory fee of like 2k yearly. I guess this deceased person has never paint from birth to death. mind u, ur only required to pay that wen u be come an adult and start to earn income. ..plz note. It is also not compulsory per say. just that it would be mandates that members of the town shouldn't visit ur ceremony if u don't pay. and if u stubbornly visit. u are fined. mind u,it is also negotiated once the said debtor is confirmed dead.... don't get me wrong.i know this facts cuz THAT IS WHERE I COME FROM. And we recently burial an uncle just this april......

The leadership/govt should be tumbled immediately for the community to be liberated.

I have received many quotes concerning issues I raised.
Like the community I came from there is General Assembly meetings during December,in such meetings the growth of the community is been discussed.
At such meetings levy is agreed upon.

They only enforce such payments during marriage bride price and funerals since most people would like to pay on their own. And when paying at such time it wont be the normal levy anymore. You either pay or cancell whatever occasion you have.

I strongly believe it is the type of situation that may have caused this 1million naira outry

All of you spewing rubbish and calling igbos all kind of names on this thread should know that this information is 100% lies. I'm from Eziowelle and we just buried our grandma some months back. on the contrary they try to make things easier for families burying the dead which I can't go into right now. A very big shame unto igbos from sister states that have commented trash about my beloved state because of a false story. nairaland you guys should stop pushing threads to front page without confirmation.

Exactly! Ohafia people did it to Ojo Maduekwe's family before he could be buried in his community. Some people remember that they have a village when there's burial or traditional marriage...

A levy of this magnitude has been on for over 3 years and it is just making the headlines. Well, they know themselves. They are business men and the money is nothing to them. Come and try to place such levies in some community and see the result. Must you bury the corpse in the village. There are public burial grounds in the cities. It's just that we attach too much importance to burial ceremony. Will the ceremony bring back the dead?
