The Federal Government on Friday said it had commenced a review of the operations of tanker drivers nationwide, following the tragedy that struck at the Lagos end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, after a petrol-laden tanker crashed and exploded last Thursday.

According to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, the review commenced at his office on Thursday at a meeting that involved key government agencies.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 2018 Africa Transport Policy Programme in Abuja on Friday, Mustapha stated that a stakeholders’ meeting would be convened on Monday to further look at the issue critically.

Asked whether the government had taken a decision to address the menace posed by tankers on roads, Mustapha replied, “We have. And as a matter of fact, there was a structured meeting in my office yesterday (Thursday) with the key government agencies to review the operations of tanker drivers. On Monday, we are calling for a stakeholders’ meeting that will look at that issue quite critically.

“This is because it is only in developing economies that you find tankers carrying and hauling petroleum products. In many other places, they use railways or other services of transportation like pipelines. But there has been vandalism of our pipelines.”

He added, “So the ability of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to move crude oil or refined products has been very limited, which is why we now use the haulage processes on our roads and this has been a major challenge.”
