Benue Assembly Speaker, Principal Officers Impeached by stane007: 5:49am On Jul 25, 2018
Benue Assembly Speaker Mr Terkimbi Ikyange; his deputy, Mrs  James Okefe; and the Majority Leader of the House, Benjamin Adanyi, have been impeached by 22 out 30 members of the state House of Assembly, for alleged abuse of office.

After the impeachment of the Benue Assembly Speaker, former Chief Whip of the House, Mr Titus Ubah, representing Vandeikya  Kyan constituency was elected by the lawmakers as the new Speaker. Johnson Egli Ahubi ( Otukpo/Akpa) was elected Deputy Speaker while Avine Agbum (Makurdi South) was elected the Majority Leader.

It was gathered that the House had on July 10 adjourned sitting to August 15, 2018, only for the 22 members to have an emergency sitting on Tuesday.  The motion for the Impeachment of the Speaker and other principal officers of the House was moved by Mr Richard Ujege (Konshisha state constituency) and seconded by Mr Anthony Ogbu (Ado state constituency).

The newly elected Speaker, Mr Titus Ubah, told newsmen that Ikyange was unanimously removed as a result of his high handedness.

This is coming few days after lawmakers of the Imo State House of Assembly, officially served an impeachment notice on the embattled Deputy Governor of the state, Prince Eze Madumere. This came even as hundreds of the supporters of the deputy governor took to the major roads in the state capital, to protest the ongoing impeachment proceedings on the state’s second citizen.

The impeachment notice, which was served on the deputy governor through substituted means (newspaper publications) on Tuesday in Owerri was signed by the Speaker, Acho Ihim and 13 other lawmakers.

The impeachment notice which was titled, ‘Notice of gross misconduct’, outlined the alleged misconduct and addressed to Madumere. The notice alleged that the deputy governor had “concealment of felonious conduct affecting the presentation of self as an eligible candidate of office of deputy governor, Imo State, having been convicted and imprisoned for theft in the United States of America.”

Other allegations of misconduct include “absence without official reason of permission duly obtained from office for a period of three months.”
