Adams Aliyu Oshiomole, the diminutive, arrogant, tough-talking former Governor of Edo State who rode on the back of Nigerian workers to rise to greatness, has turned himself into an hippopotamus, and consequently, has become a baggage or a liability of the political party he was elected to lead, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Since about four weeks ago when Adams Oshiomole mounted the saddle as the national chairman of the ruling APC, he has caused a lot of damage to the image of that political party. Instead of Oshiomole being humble and conciliatory in his new assignment, he chose to be antagonistic, and would be abusing people right, left and centre, and thereby demarketing the APC and alienating people from it.

Perhaps, Oshiomole does not know the difference between being the leader of a political party and being the leader of a labour union. That was why he could afford to address down whoever he chooses like a kindergarten, no matter the status of that person.

First, Oshiomole was to take on the man who made him, former President Olusegun Obasanjo. He called him the “Organizing Secretary of Tired Politicians”, simply because the former President had turned his back on the APC.

Oshiomole did not stop there. He sought to usurp the functions of President Muhammadu Buhari by directing Buhari’s Ministers to sack all chief executives and board members in their parastatals and to replace them with APC members within two weeks.

When the Labour and Productivity Minister, Dr. Chris Ngige, tried to explain the inappropriatness of such directive, or the difficulty of his Ministry complying with the directive, Oshiomole released the venom in his mouth. He threatened Ngige with expulsion not only from the APC, but also sack from his ministerial position. He fumed that if the Presidency could give directives and they were ignored, he, Oshiomole, would never tolerate such an impudence.

Of course, Ngige would not stomach such insolence. He advised Oshiomole to go for tutorials so that he could be versed in little basic issues that guide public governance. While accusing Oshiomole of either ignorance or mischief, Ngige submitted that “those in authority should be versed in little basic issues that guide public governance so as to be properly guided in their utterances to avoid unnecessary character assassination and unfortunate misinformation of the general public”.

Following the gale of defections that recently hit his party, the APC, Oshiomole continued to talk tough. Instead of trying to see how he could salvage the already bad situation, he said that the defectors were inconsequential, and that they had no electoral value, and therefore that their dumping of the APC would not make him to lose any sleep.

Look at what Adams Oshiomole was reported to have told the APC House of Representatives members during his meeting with them in Abuja on Thursday: “If you want to go to PDP, go. You must know that the access to CBN has been cut off, the access to NNPC has been cut off, the access to converting defence spending into private pocket has been cut off. And those who have done it, they are helping security agencies to explain. Pit latrines have been opened and people are vomiting right, left and centre. They are confessing like witches and wizards.”

He categorically stated that the APC would not dangle “dollars” or “automatic tickets” before aggrieved party members in a bid to prevent them from leaving the party.

With such arrogance, it does not seem that Oshiomole will succeed in bringing peace to the APC. He is always combative, and talks to elders as if they are school children.

Even if the APC would not dangle “dollars” and “automatic tickets” to its aggrieved members, must Oshiomole expressly say so? That’s why he has not been able to quench the gale of defections currently hitting the APC.

Somehow, I am beginning to believe insinuations in certain quarters that Adams Oshiomole, through his actions and utterances, might have been recruited to serve as an undertaker for the All Progressives Congress.

Politics is about interests, which can never be achieved by threats or by talking down on people, but through negotiations, the game of give and take.

The Federal Government launched a 701 billion Naira Intervention Fund (‘Payment Assurance Programme’) aimed at supporting power generation companies to meet their payment obligations to gas and equipment suppliers, banks and other partners. The impact is being felt, the amount of power being distributed is now currently steady at around 4,000MW – higher than previously recorded.
