Pope Changes Church Teaching On Death Penalty, Declares It 'inadmissible" by vondaman: 1:33pm On Aug 02, 2018
Pope Francis changed the Catholic Church's stance on the death penalty in a new policy published Thursday, saying that it is “inadmissible” because it “attacks” the inherent dignity of all humans.

The Vatican said the pontiff approved a change to the Catechism – the compilation of official Catholic Church teaching. Previously, the catechism said the church didn’t exclude recourse to capital punishment “if this is the only possible way of effectively defending human lives against the unjust aggressor.”

Francis announced his intention to change church teaching on capital punishment in October. The new text was approved in May and published Thursday.

The new text, contained in Catechism No. 2267, says the previous policy is outdated and that there are other ways to protect the common good.

It says: "Recourse to the death penalty on the part of legitimate authority, following a fair trial, was long considered an appropriate response to the gravity of certain crimes and an acceptable, albeit extreme, means of safeguarding the common good.

"Today, however, there is an increasing awareness that the dignity of the person is not lost even after the commission of very serious crimes. In addition, a new understanding has emerged of the significance of penal sanctions imposed by the state. Lastly, more effective systems of detention have been developed, which ensure the due protection of citizens but, at the same time, do not definitively deprive the guilty of the possibility of redemption.

"Consequently, the Church teaches, in the light of the Gospel, that “the death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person”, and she works with determination for its abolition worldwide."

The text is taken from Francis’s address to a meeting organized by the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization that took place on October 11 last year, the Catholic Herald reports.

In an accompanying letter explaining the change, the head of the Vatican’s doctrine office said the development of Catholic doctrine on capital punishment didn’t contradict prior teaching, but rather was an evolution of it.

“If, in fact the political and social situation of the past made the death penalty an acceptable means for the protection of the common good, today the increasing understanding that the dignity of a person is not lost even after committing the most serious crimes,” said Cardinal Luis Ladaria, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Francis has long railed against the death penalty, insisting it can never be justified, no matter how heinous the crime. He has also long made prison ministry a mainstay of his vocation. On nearly every foreign trip, Francis has visited with inmates to offer words of solidarity and hope, and he still stays in touch with a group of Argentine inmates he ministered to during his years as archbishop of Buenos Aires.

Generally, Pope Francis is a Dynamite and Specifically a Correct Apostle of Jesus Christ by St. John 17.
God bless Pope Francis for simply asking us and Governments everywhere to let God be The Author and Finisher of all Judgements. God is our Instructor, Director and Discernment. His Name is Wisdom, Knowledge and Understanding. He owns All SOULS CONTAINED IN OUR CONSCIENCES. He alone uses them to serve His Pleasures, since they were, in the first place, made in His Image. He will never allow The Righteous to soil his hands by killing. He uses Satan to kill and destroy all unrighteousness. No one needs to be jealous of God's Power. God, Himself, is The Jealous One. As for the Armed Forces in Wars, God is The Sorter of their actions, interactions and movements. Following the principles of not being yoked unequally with the unbelievers, States can quarantine suspected hardened criminals. States cannot arm a tribe with AK47 to kill other tribes. It's low class Animal life.

You might as well suspend the judiciary and eliminate the police force. As though the Isrealites in scripture where not sentencing people to.death! Christianity has no role in answering the question on death penalty as it is a govt thing entirely. And i disagree with francis completely, the death penalty should remain for extreme cases of mass murder.

No. God's Wisdom established all those and The Armed Forces for Humans' Justices system. But God has never permitted Humans to kill fellow Humans for whatever reasons.
I say, in wars, Soldiers can kill by Instruction from God to Satan to kill Demons like it. God will never allow The Righteous, in any situation, to soil his hands with killings.
Christianity is established by the Catholic Church. The catholic is therefore the final Authority for its rules, regulations and the amendment thereof.

the Israelites in scripture were also stoning the adulterous women... we don't consider that humane or admissible any more. the judiciary may sentence crime, the police may enforce laws but nobody has the right to kill another person whether there are readily available alternatives.

Christianity has a role for setting morals among its adherents and the morality of killing an already contained criminal is a moral question and within the purview of the church.

What is the relevance of citing the adulterous woman in this case? Jesus showed mercy to an adulterous woman who was going to be mobbed to death by some self righteous religious fanatics. He never condemned the govt right to sentence to death or pass judgment anywhere in scripture. Infact apostle paul reiterated the right of the govt to "bear the sword".

You are an Apostle of Christ to make and evangelise on Laws for Christ.

One of thae most murderous institutions the world has elver seen now advocating for the abolition of the death penalty.
The doctrines of xtianity keep changing to fit please the times.I guess they would readily sing a new tune when a new trend emerges on the death penalty issue.

The Jews weren't Christians though

even till today Christians only form about 2% of Israeli population. The Jews at that time were operating under the mosaic laws infact the accusers of the woman cited the mosaic law when addressing Jesus for that same reason

they said to him, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?"

Jesus then said anyone who hasn't sinned should cast the first stone, shouldn't this statement apply to death penalty today?

BTW I'm totally against death penalty and that's why I'm discussing this. I'm not a Christian

The NASS didn't make The 1999 Constitution but speak and think for it when they amend it.
The Pope doesn't make "Thou shall not kill". The Constitution, which is The Bible and The Words of God make it.
Like The Pope, every Born Again speaks and thinks for God whenever they preech and evangelise on The Words of God.

it is relevant because it shows that laws written in scripture as allowed by God aren't always immutable, the law also say to divorce your wife and that law was overthrow by Jesus so too an eye for an eye etc.

the Bible also allows people to have slaves infact the apostle Paul confirmed this right in the new testament and encouraged slaves to be submissive, we know today that slavery isn't right even though it is found in the holy books, Catholics call it development of doctrine, as the years go by the church comes to understand more deeply the gospel that was once and for all delivered to the saints and as we come to a deeper understanding we form our society to those ideals.

this isn't so much of a shift, the Catholic church teaches that the death penalty is a punishment for extreme cases, in fact there is very old theology about the conditions that are necessary for the state to consider overriding human dignity for the sake of the common good... the church has been pretty clear for some time now that those conditions no longer exist today and that the death penalty should be stopped.

this one is pretty old, I remember pope John Paul ii and Benedict xvi repeating the same thing, Francis is simply making it official.

the Vatican has been advocating against the death penalty for a long time now.
