The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) is a global network of individuals and organisations concerned with the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding worldwide coordinates the annual World Breastfeeding Week campaign which is slated for August 1 – 7, 2018.

During this week, maternal healthcare workers, nurses, clinics, hospitals all over the world organise activities to foster and encourage infant breastfeeding among nursing mothers. In its World Breastfeeding Week 2018 press release, WABA explained that the 2018 event focuses on how breastfeeding helps prevent malnutrition in all its forms, ensures food security even in times of crisis and breaks the cycle of poverty.

Here are three breastfeeding myth you should know about

Small Breasts don’t produce enough milk

Size doesn’t matter, the breast tissue you need to produce breastmilk grows in response to pregnancy regardless of the breast size.

When breastfeeding, watch the baby not the clock

There are certain myths about the length of time you are allowed to breastfeed for. This doesn’t matter, watch the baby, not the clock. Whether long or short, ensure your baby has had enough to eat. Talk you your doctor if you are afraid the baby is not getting enough to eat.

Breastfeeding is a very reliable form of birth control

Don’t rely on breastfeeding as birth control if you are not ready to be pregnant again. There are certain criteria that should be met if you want to rely on breastfeeding as a form of birth control, an example is your baby less than 6 months, are you breastfeeding frequently, you can talk to your doctor about this.
