The length of time that the judicial system takes to resolve election disputes in Nigeria is a major problem in our electoral system. This is one area that will definitely have to be looked into before the 2011 elections. Several cases arising from the conduct of the 2007 general elections are just being decided. Only yesterday (Tuesday, June 17th, 2011) did appeal courts decide cases brought against Dr. Mua'zu Babangida Aliyu and Dr. Bukola Saraki.

The Abuja Court of Appeal refused to grant the request by David Umaru of the ANPP to quash the election of Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu as governor of Niger State, and the Appeal Court sitting in Ilorin, Kwara state dismissed a suit filed by Oyinkansola Saraki of the Peoples Progressive Alliance (PPA) against the election of DR. Bukola Saraki as the governor of Kwara State in the April 2007 general elections.

David Umaru and the ANPP had said that Governor Aliyu did not resign or retire from the federal public service as demanded by law as at April 2007 when he contested the gubernatorial election, but in a unanimous ruling delivered by Justice Mary Peter Odili, the appeal court held that the petition against the governor was worthless, having been filed outside the mandatory 30 days stipulated by law.

Ruling on the petition brought by OYINKANSOLA SARAKI, the candidate of the Peoples’ Progressive Alliance (PPA) against the election of DR. BUKOLA SARAKI, as Governor of Kwara State, Justice N.S. Ngwuta, who led five others in an unanimous judgement read by Justice M.A. Owoade, dismissed the petition as lacking in merit.

But really, should it take 3 years for rulings on a sensitive subject such as election petitions to be delivered. Something should really be done about this before 2011.

Oyinkansola Saraki is a sister to Bukola Saraki. She's just trying to play politics. For Christ sake, what's she saying at this moment?
