“I remembered everything. Just like yesterday.


I came out of my class. People that knew me started pouring water on me and congratulating me.


I had just finished my final university exam.

I was overwhelmed with joy. At last, I’m a graduate. I had done it.
When I got to my hostel, I started to remember everything I had gone through. The overcrowded lecture halls.

The sadist lecturers.

The daily long trek, under the hot sun, from the school gate to my department. The night classes and tutorials.

The mid night candles. The hunger.

I remember how I almost failed a course because I couldn’t afford to pay for handout.

Tears of joy filled my eyes. I looked up in the ceiling and thanked God.

Weeks later, the result came out. I was the 3rd best in my department with a sharp 2.1 and GDP of 4.2. I felt like I was on top of the world. My parents were proud of me. Their effort wasn’t in vain.

NYSC came and went. Then, it was time to take on the world.

I was optimistic. I was very confident that Job was waiting for me. After all, I’m a 2.1 material.

I went to the cybercafé, created my C.V, sent the soft copy to my email and started sending to companies.

6 months passed. No reply. I started to worry. What was wrong? Why aren’t they replying my message?

I figured that may be, I was doing something wrong.

So I started to search Google. Google advice me to;

- Improve my C.V

- Join job sites

- Submit my C.V. with cover letter

And a host of other advice.

The advice was gold. I didn’t know all these before. So I started to implement them immediately.

I improved my C.V, created a cover letter, joined sites like jobberman and started getting notifications.

This time, I was sure that it will work. Another 6 months passed.
Nothing!

My parents started getting impatient. They could not understand it. How can I graduate with my kind of result and still be looking for job?

They had hoped that when I finished, I will reduce the burden of sponsoring my younger ones. But one year later, I’m still dependent on them.

Even my younger ones started expressing their disappointment. They have hoped that when I finished and got a job, they will be getting some pocket money from me.

I became depressed and frustrated. I didn’t know what else to do.
Then as if God has finally heard my prayer, a ray of hope shone on me.

I was coming back from my usual job hunt when I saw a “Vacancy” signboard. It was from a big school. They were looking for an accounting teacher.

I figured out that they will be paying well. After all, they are big. And accounting was what I studied.

So I was sure I would get it.

I applied. After the interview, the proprietor said they will be paying me N20,000.

I was shocked!
