Episode 23 (Chapter 22) SUNDAY EVENING … Rachael came in from visiting her elder sister, Abigail. She greeted Mrs Jackson who was in the sitting room reading the latest edition of Awake! Magazine. “Good evening mum.” She greeted as she headed straight to her room. Mrs Jackson adjusted her thick pair of reading glasses that sat on the edge of her nose and responded: “Good Evening, my dear. How’s your sister and her family?” “They are fine mum. Sister Abigail extended her greetings.” As she was about getting to her room, Mrs Jackson called her back. “Rachael dear, please come. Let’s talk for a minute.” She came back and sat beside her mum on the couch. Mrs Jackson began … “Rachael, what’s the situation now with you and Tommy. I noticed that you have been kind of avoiding him of late. Still on the genotype issue?” “Hmmm!” She sighed. It was a deep one. “Mummy, I don’t know ooo. I’m just confused and I don’t know what to do. You know I love him so much but since the death of Samuel, I don’t really know again. A part of me wants to continue but the other part is scared. More so, Sister Abigail and her husband and some friends are mounting pressure on me to stop the relationship … mummy… I am seriously confused.” “Hmmm!” Mrs Jackson too heaved a deep sigh. “I know how you feel my daughter. But was it that you two didn’t know about your genotypes when you started going out?” “We did, mum. We just had faith that our first baby wouldn’t be born as SS and we planned to stop after the first one if God answers our prayers.” Rachael explained sounding dejected. “And what happened to that faith now?” “Ah, mummy, I don’t know again ooo. After seeing what happened to Samuel I began to see things differently. It’s just unfortunate that our wedding is around the corner.” “But have you told him yet?” “Not yet ma.” “And why is that? So you prefer avoiding him the way you have been doing all along?” “Mummy, I don’t know ooo.” “Well, I suggest you do. At least you owe him that one. Tommy is a very good boy and he deserves to be treated well. See, I can’t make your decision for you but I know that Tommy is a boy that will make your life happy and worthwhile. You are my daughter and I know you well. The first day I met that boy and seeing how he was able to turn your life around when we almost lost hope on you I knew he was meant for you. I have seen cases like your own that turned out happily and I have equally seen those that didn’t turn out well.” “Mummy, what do I do?” She asked. She was about to cry. Mrs Jackson drew her closer to herself and hugged her tightly. “My dear, pray and pray hard to God for his direction and then follow your heart! This is not a decision anybody will make for you.” It was like the words had some sort of magic in them for she was relieved as she repeated the word s to herself. “I should pray hard to God and then follow my heart.” She thanked her mother and got up to leave for her room. “Remember to call Magic Boy and let him know what’s going on.” Mrs Jackson added. “Okay, mum.” Mrs Jackson who remained all by herself in the sitting room was deep in thought. ‘How ironic! Life can be unfaithful and cruel sometimes. It can betray you when you least expect. See how life has chosen to rock boisterously the fragile boat of these children whose love we were all in constant amazement. But why is life so adamant at shattering their love boat into pieces especially at this time? Well, God Almighty, please I commit these children unto your care. Please let your will take place in their lives.’ With that, she stood up and headed for her room too. Back in Rachael’s room, she poured out her heart to God in heartfelt prayer. She sobbed as she did so and by the time she finished, she was refreshed and relieved. She thought so much about what her mother said and she picked up her phone to call Tomiwa. Tomiwa was at home lying in his bed and reflecting over the recent events when Rachael’s call came in. “Hello Dear.” She said in a low calm voice when Tomiwa picked the call. Tomiwa was a bit surprised. Did she just call him ‘dear’? “Hello Beautiful, trust you are doing fine?” He answered. “I am doing fine and you?” She sounded warm but beneath the warmth, Tomiwa could sense that all was not fine—something was still wrong. “What is the problem, Sweetheart?” “Hmmm … nothing. Just that …” She paused. “Hello Sweetheart, see, don’t forget that I know you well and I can easily tell if something is wrong or not. Right now, I know something is not only wrong but seriously wrong. Please feel free to talk to me.” “I … I … have been going through a hard time recently…” On hearing that Tomiwa swiftly jumped out of bed and sat at the edge. “What … what’s wrong?” He asked breathlessly. “Samuel died three weeks ago and it really got to me badly …” “You mean Samuel, your family friend? How did it happen?” “You know I told you he had sickle cell disorder? He didn’t survive the last attack.” “GOD! That’s serious! Oh, sorry about that.” “Tommy, you see, that got me thinking about us. I’m not sure again if we are making the right choice.” Tomiwa’s heart sank immediately. He now knew what was responsible for Rachael’s sudden change of attitude. But they had talked this matter over several times and they both agreed to go on based on their strong faith. They had derived their inspiration from one of Tomiwa’s friends who got married to the man she loved after they discovered they were both of the AS genotype group and their faith paid up when they were blessed with a bouncing baby boy with AA genotype. Beyond that, they had consulted experts who outlined their options before them and after considering all of these, they had decided to go on. “Hmmm!” Tomiwa sighed. It was a long and heavy one. “So, what do you suggest we do now?” “Tommy, it’s not what we can discuss on phone. I’ll be at your place tomorrow so that we can talk it through.” “Okay. That’s a good idea. I will be expecting you.” “Okay. Bye dear.” She ended the call. Immediately he finished the call, Tomiwa’s stomach rumbled and he ran to the toilet holding his stomach as he did so. The discussion with Rachael had suddenly disrupted his body system. His fate now hanged in the balance and he knew it. The following day, Rachael woke up early and got prepared for Tomiwa’s place. She told her mother that she was going to see Tomiwa and it brought a great deal of joy to Mrs Jackson’s heart. She was happy that her daughter heeded her advice. “Okay Rachael, make sure you greet Magic Boy for me ooo.” “Mummy, you and this your Magic Boy sha! Anyways, I will deliver your message.” She laughed as she closed the door behind her. Tomiwa also woke up early. In fact, he didn’t have any choice on his part because the anticipation in his heart prevented him from sleeping during the night. He was worried about the outcome of their discussion; it could go either way. Even at that, he was sure that Rachael still loved him dearly. So, much depended on how well he could convince her and rekindle that strong faith they once shared. He had spent most of the night praying for God’s will to take place in the matter. While all these bothered his mind, one thing that made him happy was the fact that he was going to see Rachael after three solid weeks. He had so much longed to see her beautiful face, smell the alluring aroma of her perfume, and stroke her silky hair that he wondered how he had managed to cope for those three weeks. He quickly arranged and tidied up the house. It was more like a homecoming for Rachael and the house had to be sparkling clean to welcome her. He entered into the kitchen to check if there were enough stuff to prepare when she arrived. He opened the refrigerator and noticed that his stock of drinks had depleted so he hurried to the nearest supermarket to replenish it before her arrival. It was 10.30 am already and Rachael had called about ten minutes earlier to inform him she was about thirty minutes away from his place. That meant he had about twenty minutes to do all he had to do. He didn’t want her to come without him being ready, so he had to run down to the supermarket. As he did, he stumbled over a stone on the ground and he fell down heavily bruising his elbow and arm. The pain was much but he had to stand up in the midst of cries of “Oh, sorry ooo.”, “Eyah, e pele ooo (meaning sorry ooo.)”, “Take it easy ooo.” from passersby who empathized with him. The thought of seeing Rachael was enough to dowse the pain. In no time, he was back home and having satisfied himself that everything was set, he went inside to get dressed and began to wait for her. Rachael was getting close when she received a call from Bayo. “Hello Angel, where are you?” “On my way out. Anything?” “I was thinking I could come pick you. I wish like seeing you.” “Seeing me? But we were together two days ago and we are going to see tomorrow at work. More so, I’m out already.” However, Bayo knew the right spot to hit. With a little more persuasion, she abandoned her visit to Tomiwa’s place and turned around to meet Bayo. It seemed that in her moment of weakness, brought about by the recent happenings, she had let her guard down. Bayo had noticed this and had capitalized on it. He was using it to the full against her. He had stealthily crept into her heart and she had begun having feelings for him without her realising it. At seeing Bayo, her eyes shone in excitement as they caught their fun. Meanwhile, Tomiwa was anxiously waiting for her. He checked the time and it was 11.30 am. Rachael was supposed to have arrived about forty minutes ago! He called her and she lied that the bus she boarded broke down and that the driver was fixing it. Twenty minutes later, Rachael called to tell him that the bus had been fixed and she was on her way. He believed her and kept on waiting for her. Rachael, on the other hand, was having a good time with Bayo. Tomiwa was becoming restless. Based on his last conversation with Rachael, she was supposed to have been there more than thirty minutes ago. He kept calling her but she wasn’t picking the calls. This got Tomiwa scared. Had something happened to her on the way? Was she involved in an accident or something? He could hardly sit down again. He paced up and down the sitting room as he kept calling her without any response. At a point, he went to stand by the main gate but there was no sight of her nor any response to his calls. He checked the time again and it was 1.45 pm. He tried her line one more time and she picked. “Hey Sweetheart, what happened? Hope you are fine? I was beginning to get worried that something bad had happened to you. Why were you not picking your calls? Are you sure you are alright?” He rushed all the questions in one breath. Rachael began to stammer. “Erm … erm … mum … mummy called that she needed my attention urgently so I had to go back home to attend to her.” Tomiwa wasn’t convinced. He didn’t know what to believe. Rachael was not used to telling lies but he didn’t know what to make out of what just happened. Just then Bayo spoke up and the phone caught his voice clearly. Tomiwa heard the voice and he recognized it at once. He wanted to react but he hesitated and remained calm. “It’s okay.” Tomiwa said and immediately he finished talking, Rachael ended the call as fast as possible. She didn’t want to give any room for any questioning. Tomiwa felt bad. He couldn’t explain all that was happening and everything looked like a dream to him. So, many things had changed about Rachael within such a short space of time. Something told him that there was more to Rachael’s recent behaviour than the genotype issue. He looked at himself and pitied himself. He had abandoned everything else for Rachael that day and even sustained some bruises all because of her. And now, he wasn’t only not going to see her but he had a complicated issue to tackle also. Miles away, Bayo and Rachael continued to enjoy the company of each other. “Rachael, there is something I’ve been wanting to tell you.” Bayo told her as they sat in an eatery to take some snacks. “Mm-Hmmm? What’s that?” Rachael asked as she took a sip from her bottle of Pepsi. “I … I … have actually been thinking about you but I didn’t know how to say it. I find it hard to get you off my mind all the time. I … think … I am falling in love with you.” Bayo forced himself to bear his mind to her. “What?!” She screamed as she choked on her drink. “So, this is what all these your niceness was all about, Bayo? Especially when you are aware that I am engaged to someone else and my wedding is around the corner!” She flared up. Bayo’s next statement shocked her even more. “Well, if that’s what you want to hear, then, yes! This is what all this is all about. I love you and I won’t open my eyes and watch you get married to someone that will make your life miserable!” It was his straight-forwardness and boldness that shocked her more. “Bayo!” “I don’t care how you look at me from now on but all I want you to know is that I’m doing this for your good. Years from now you will look back and thank me for this. See, I will be frank with you this time around. It is suicidal getting married to Tommy. Have you ever given thought to what it means to have SS children? I have seen families who sold all they had to care for their sickle cell children and yet they still lost them. Is that the kind of life you want for yourself? Believe me, Tomiwa will only ruin your life and those of your future children. Hence, I don’t feel bad asking you out despite knowing you are engaged to him!” He was blunt but it touched her deeply. “And what about Bunmi and Anthonia?” “Oh, those ones? I have already sacked them! All for you.” “You did what?” “You heard me well. I have sent them packing.” “You sent them packing because of an engaged lady? That is ridiculous, Bayo!” “Well, I was going to send them away anyways whether I met you or not. Their time was already up. It was only a coincidence that it happened when I met you.” He then stood up and went over to Rachael. He knelt down before her and held her hands. “See Angel, I need you just like you need me. I need to settle down; I don’t want to play around anymore and you are the only one I see that can help me make that happen. You too, on the other hand, needs someone who’s not an AS like Tomiwa and that I can give to you. Why not give me a chance to make you happy?” He was walking his way into her heart again. Rachael looked away, thought for some time and replied, “Hmmm … well, let me think about it.” It was 8.30 pm. Tomiwa laid in his bed staring into empty space lost in thought. Then his phone rang. It was Mrs Jackson. “Hello ma, Good evening ma.” He answered the phone. “Hello my son, how are you doing?” “I am fine ma and you ma?” “I’m fine my son. Is Rachael still with you? She isn’t back yet and it is getting late.” She asked. “Rachael?” Tomiwa was stunned. “Rachael didn’t come here. She told me she was on her way in the morning and later told me that you needed her attention urgently so she turned back to come home to attend to you.” “What?! Rachael said that? That is ridiculous! She told me she was coming to your place and when I called her hours later she made me believe she was with you.” “Ah, mummy, I am as surprised as you are. Rachael has been behaving strangely lately and what happened today has come to confirm my suspicion.” “Don’t worry, my son. I will handle this. Just be patience and all will be fine.” “Thank you, mummy. Please take care of yourself. Good night, ma.” “Good night, my dear. Sleep well.” Sleep well? How could he sleep well when his house was about to catch fire? It was obvious that Rachael had more up her sleeves than the genotype issue she was hammering on and her mother’s call was really an eye opener. It was then he was able to put the pieces together and the picture started becoming clearer. Lanre’s words never to trust any woman absolutely came to his mind and he wondered if Rachael was proving him right. To be continued... 1 Like 1 Share |

Oh.. I feel so sorry for Tomiwa. Ladies are so emotional and it's very easy for a guy to find his way to their hearts if he plays his cards right. That's why a girl should never put herself in a situation that'll put her in jeopardy. She never should have started going out with Bayo in the first place. That was just a recipe for disaster! 2 Likes |

I feel the reason why Rachael doesn't wanna see tomiwa is cus she knows tomiwa will convince her 2 go ahead with their marital program.Bayo on the other hand is a distraction for her, maybe cus she isn't mentally prepared 2 approach tomiwa. In the end,it's better she breaks tomiwa's heart now than live miserable with sick kids filled with hate and regret. Tommy has 2 go. 1 Like |

Episode 24 (Chapter 23) MRS JACKSON WAS VERY crossed with Rachael when she came back home that night. She wondered when she began telling such huge lies. She knew her daughter was never like that. Perhaps, she had started keeping bad company. She reasoned. She confronted Rachael about it and when she heard that her mum had already spoken to Tomiwa she knew she had been busted. “So, who then were you with if not Magic Boy?” Mrs Jackson questioned, still disappointed and boiling with anger. “It … it … was … it … was …” Rachael stuttered. “So, you have suddenly lost your power of speech, abi? Or you are too ashamed to talk?” Mrs Jackson snapped at her. “I was … with Bayo, a colleague in the office.” “Oh, I see. Was that not the same boy you went to the cinema with on Saturday? Or you think I don’t know what is going on in this house?” “Ah!” “Yes! Don’t ah me, please. Do you think I don’t see things going on under my roof? So, it is because of that boy that you have been acting funny these days? Has this issue of genotype become an excuse for you to cheat on that innocent boy? True, there’s an issue at hand and instead of you to face it, you are busy following that thin-legged boy about. Mtcheeeew!” She ended with hiss. “Mummy, I’m not cheating on your Magic Boy. Bayo is just a friend and nothing more!” “What do you call this then? Romancing the stone if not cheating?” Rachael said nothing. She only folded her arms across her chest and pouted her lips. After some time she left for her room. The following day while at work, Tomiwa called her. She didn’t avoid the call—she couldn’t. The encounter with her mother the night before was still fresh in her mind. If her mother called Tomiwa the day before, he definitely was aware she had lied. Hence, there was no need aggravating the issue; it was best for her to pick the call. “Hello Beautiful, waddup?” She was surprised at his calm voice which beamed with affection. In the light of the incident of the previous day, she was expecting him to be brash, to say the least. “H … Hel … Hello, Tommy. Good day” “Good day, Love. Are you alright?” “Yea … Yeah, I’m fine.” “Babe, we need to talk. I’m thinking tomorrow after work. Will that be okay by you?” “That will be fine.” “Okay then. See you tomorrow. Take care of yourself. Love you.” “Bye.” She ended the call. The following day they met as agreed. The venue was their usual spot—the garden at the Lagoon Front of University of Lagos. This was a spot that was full of several lovely memories for the two of them. But this evening, whether it would continue to be a place of pleasant memories remained to be seen. Tomiwa got there first and Rachael arrived a few minutes later. On catching sight of her some distance away, his heart sank in sorrow and pain. Her beauty was mind-boggling as ever before but the more he watched her and appreciated her charms, the deeper his heart sank into the quagmire of sorrow—what a perfect contradiction! He had expected his heart to bubble forth with joy at seeing her because he had not seen her in weeks and he longed to see her. Ironically, the reverse was the case; her sight was ripping his heart apart! The more he appreciated her beauty, the more he realised how close he was to losing her and how much he stood to lose if that happened. This was what brought him pain. His heart was heavy but he put up a charade that all was fine. Rachael got to where he was sitting and sat beside him keeping a considerable distance between them, unlike previous times. “Good evening Sweetheart, how was work today?” He greeted the moment she sat beside him. “Good evening. Work was fine just that it was stressful.” “Eyah, pele.” “Thank you. How about yours?” “Well, you already said it. As stressful as yours.” Then he dropped a quick compliment, “By the way you look good.” “Thank you. You said we had to talk.” “Yes, I did. Seriously, don’t you think we have to? Look at how far apart we have grown in a very short period of time. We used to the couple everybody looked up to and now I don’t know what to make of us anymore. We don’t see again and we barely talk these days. We are now living in separate worlds and the chasm between those worlds widens by the second. Baby, I miss those good old days and I long to see them again.” “Tommy, I already told you what the issue is. Samuel’s sudden death is really opening my eyes to things. I think we seriously need to think through our decision. These are trying times, Tommy. And I seriously need to clear my head.” “Good. I don’t have a problem with that. In fact, if you decide to go ahead with the relationship, I want it to come from the bottom of your heart and not because anybody sweet-talked you into it.” “Thank God you know that!” There was a long pause and suddenly Tomiwa dropped the bomb. “What about Bayo?” “Ehn? B … B … B … Bayo?” That was the confirmation he needed. The mention of Bayo so suddenly startled her and she began jittering visibly. “H … H … He … is … is … fine.” She managed to squeeze out of her vocal cord. Tomiwa smiled calmly and continued, “Rachael, you know me and you know that I am a very intelligent man …” “Yeah, everyone knows that.” “And I reason a lot and know a lot though I may keep quiet and pretend not to know anything. I know what is going on between you and Bayo. I know you have been going places together …” “Ah!” Racheal opened her mouth wide. Tomiwa continued, “I know you were both at Ozone Cinemas on Saturday …” “You knew that too?” Her mouth opened wider. “And on Monday when you lied to me that you went back home to attend to mummy, I knew you were actually with Bayo having a meal in an eatery.” “Ah! You knew all that too?” At this point, she needed someone to help close her mouth. How Tomiwa got to know all that was way beyond her comprehension—she looked completely naked before him! “You knew all these and you neither said anything nor reacted?!” “Yes I did, Sweetheart. I want to give us a chance. Moreover, I still love you beyond words, Rachael. I simply want my Rachael back, that’s all.” Those words and Tomiwa’s calm demeanour in handling the issue struck a chord in her. “Tommy, you are such a good man! I feel awful for what I have done.” She began to cry. Tomiwa moved closer and threw his arm round her shoulders to console her. The gesture made her weep even more. The more he consoled her, the more it seemed that he unleashed the teary torrents of her eyes. “Tommy … I am sorry … I am very sorry … Please forgive me.… I didn’t know what I was doing.… I was confused and didn’t know what to do.… Please forgive me.” She said with the sob slowing down the smooth flow of the words. “I think I underestimated Bayo and his desperation. There’s something I will to give him though, he is very cunning. He capitalized on my confused state. He kept disturbing and pestering me until I couldn’t resist him anymore. Also, he kept feeding my head with all sorts of negative thoughts and told me it was suicidal to get married to you.… I’m so sorry, Sweetheart. I should have known better.” She continued weeping until mucus starting dropping from her nostrils. Tomiwa handed her his handkerchief. “It’s okay, Sweetheart. We all have our moments of weakness and I think that was one of yours. I am not holding that against you. But lemme ask … how far have you two gone?” “We haven’t gone far at all; we just started.” The weeping had stopped but she was still sobbing when she answered. “Good. That means it will be easier for you to end it. All you need to do is to keep your distance from him and be firm in letting him know you are no longer interested because you are engaged to someone else.” Tomiwa advised. “That shouldn’t be a difficult thing for me to do. Thank you so much, Sweetheart. Your type is rare, Tommy.” “You are a rare gem too, my dear and any guy who realises that will be understanding.” “I love you, Handsome.” The sober looking Rachael said as they both hugged. “As for the genotype issue, I have started doing more research and consulting experts. I have even contacted the National Sickle Cell Centre and have booked an appointment for counselling. I think things are looking promising.” Tomiwa assured.
