Malaria remains an acute public health problem in the country. Malaria mortality rate increased daily and it is during rainy season that morbidity and mortality are on the increase as a result of malaria. Malaria is an infectious disease caused by a parasite which spread through the bite of an infected female mosquito.
According to Dr. Bolaji Olusayo, a medical practitioner at Oke Ado specialist hospital says the prevalence of malaria is higher in children during rainy season as a result of climate change.
According to him, children under 5 and 10 years should wear warm clothes to school and mothers should always endeavour to make their children sleep under mosquito treated nets.
He said managing malaria poses challenges in Nigeria every year, especially with the coming of the rainy season.
“The World Health Organization directed malaria intervention on the under fives whose immunities are lower; this burden has now shifted to the under 10, who were hitherto neglected’” he added.
“The poor masses are also affected due to ineffective and costly way of treatment, which cannot be afforded by the parents.”
“Children also miss school. Absenteeism leads to lower Intelligent Quotient in a child, and loss or reduction in productivity of workers,” he said.
He added that the National Malaria Treatment Policy in Nigeria does not allow malaria to be treated without first being diagnose through the microscope. Treatment of malaria without microscopy is tantamount to incompetence.
He has urged parents to take necessary measures in tackling malaria during the rainy season. The insecticide treated nets provide a physical barrier against mosquitoes; also, because they are impregnated with insecticide, they can reduce the lifespan of a mosquito, decreasing the chance of it transmitting malaria to another person.
