As I become immersed in the Travel/Tour Industry I have observed that Nigeria is not among the traveler's top 10 choice destinations in Africa. I sampled the opinions of regular visitors to Africa to know why and they say it is because they hear Nigeria is a dangerous place for a foreigner to visit. They say they are scared of kidnappings, weary of scammers and being harassed to pay bribes right from the point of entry and throughout their stay in the country.
Ironically this erroneous notion is not being propagated by the international media or rival countries but by Nigerians. Many Nigerians abroad tend to portray the country as one horror-filled hell-hole,sowing the seeds of fear in the hearts of friends and colleagues abroad who enquire about their country. They never have anything positive to say about Nigeria. The second source of negative views comes from those Nigerians at home. They come on social media daily to lambast the country;posting and sharing with glee all manner of bad news(real or fake) relating to Nigeria. These ones will tell an intending visitor that if they were in their shoes they would never come Nigeria. To do what!?

I'm not going to enumerate the pros and cons of visiting Nigeria, every country has its peculiarities. I'm solely interested in pointing out the damage being done to our country and its travel/tourism potential by its citizens. Lately the travel/tourism industry was projected to provide 2.7m jobs by 2027. Is has the capability of contributing about N4bn annually to our GDP. Consider the huge potential that is being frittered away and redirected right now to Ghana,Benin,Togo et al. Are they better off than Nigeria? How many times do we see their citizens running down their country on social media?
Fellow Nigerians in the diaspora stop spoiling business for us down here. If you will not return to build with us the least you can do is stop discouraging others who want to visit knowing that they will be directly investing in a fledging industry back home that caters for young Nigerians and puts food on the table of many families making an honest living from hospitality, leisure and entertainment. PLEASE STOP DE-MARKETING NIGERIA. As for those of you living in the country, una own case na im dey pain me pass. Don't you know that promoting our rich cultural heritage to the world attracts the $'s you so badly want to travel abroad to earn? You just have to see the best in this country before you can offer it to a visiting stranger.
Finally,I would like advice that we take a cue from our African-American brothers and sisters who recently have begun to throng to continent in recognition of the ongoing African rennaissance. The time more than ever to showcase our hospitability and trustworthiness is now.
