Snail culture is promoted for its larger size ,faster growth and rapid reproduction other reasons include simplicity of management and it's an excellent source of protein for humans. Snails are hermaphrodites which means they ve both male and female sex organs but they must mate with another snail of the same specie before they can lay eggs Snails court/date with one another before mating ,mating is preceded by courtship during which partners circle one another touching each other with tentacles When snails mate 14days after they are ready to lay eggs ,the ground where they lay egg should not be too sandy but permeable and humid ,they look out for a good place to lay egg ,having found d place they start digging d ground with d foot ,crumbling d hardest lump with their teeth or radula ,they create a hole and use their shell to widen it and enters into it to lay eggs, after laying the cover it with soil and slime inorder to hide it from bugs which can eat d eggs There are different species of snails and these are explained below 1.Achatina Achatina: This is called tiger snail cos the shell looks like tiger body ,They are said to be largely located in west Africa e.g. Nigeria,Ivory coast ,Ghana, Liberia,Togo ,Benin ,sierra leone The shells of AA can grow to a length of 20cm with a diameter of 10cm .each snail lays up to 1000eggs a year .This breed is most common in Ghana,Republic of Benin,Rivers and Akwaibom state ,it is bigger in size and less pointed apex compared to Fulica,it can grow up to 200mm The shell is slightly more yellow with distinct brown jagged bands representing tiger outlook ,the color is grayish but dotted by white spots It lays bw 100-300eggs per clutch 4 times a year 2. Achatina Fulica : This specie of snail is largely located in east Africa especially Kenya & Tanzania ,they can also be found in d US ,China , Taiwan ,India and Nigeria. The adult AF is usually around 7cm in height and 20cm or more in length . The shells are conical in shape(pointed n long) the color s of the shells vary but brown is d most common color ,the can grow to 8inches long 5inches wide . It is the smallest of the three species, mature adult weighs bw 50-150g . It lays the smallest egg and highest number of eggs bw 200-400eggs per clutch which are delicate to handle 3. Archachatina marginata aka farmers choice : They are called giant west African snail .They can grow up to 21cm in height and 13cm in maximum diameter .Adult AM can measure up to 326mm and weighs bw 300-1kg when fully grown. The shell is much less pointed than the Achatina species. The tip of the shell apex occasionally has pink or orange hue as a distinguishing characteristic, the head is dark gray but the rest of the foot is lighter .The juveniles are often patterned with brown stripes and possess translucent or opaque shell ,they lay fewer eggs than the other species, the average clutch size is 8-9eggs, but the exact number vary from 4-14eggs per clutch depending on the size and weight of d snail ,the shell strength is stronger than those of achatina species and it's wider at d posterior end FEED AND FEEDING Snail can eat different varieties of food, ranging from fruits, leaves ( cocoayam leaves etc) to households foods provided it doesn't contain salt. So the following can be fed to snails; watermelon, orange, pawpaw, cucumber, eba, eko (agidi), and all other plant food human eat, without salt. But for fast growth and hard shell it's advisable to include compounded feed and calcium as supplements. Attached is picture of some of our snail feeding on compounded feed.
