Type 1 diabetes, is also know as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is a condition in which the pancreas produces very little or in some cases no insulin. Genetics and some viruses may contribute to type 1 diabetes. Although it appears in childhood or adolescence, it can also be found in adults.

It’s so sad that this condition has no cure. The treatment focuses on managing blood sugar levels with insulin, diet and lifestyle. Insulin plays a huge role in the body; insulin is a hormone that comes from gland situated behind and below the stomach.

The pancreas secrets insulin into the bloodstream, insulin also circulates allowing sugar to enter your cells. As your blood sugar level drops, so does the secretion of insulin from your pancreas.

Symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes

Increased thirst
Frequent urination
Bed-wetting in children who weren’t do so before
Extreme hunger
Unintended weight loss
Blurred vision
Fatigue
Weakness
It is very important to see a doctor when you notice any of the signs and symptoms stated above


Causes of Type 1 Diabetes

There are unknown causes of type 1 diabetes. However, so researches say that the body’s own immune system which normally fights harmful bacteria and viruses mistakenly destroys the insulin producing cells in the pancreas. Some other causes includes: genetics, and exposure to viruses.

Risk Factors for Type 1 Diabetes

Family history
Genetics
Age ( first peak is usually found in children between 4/7 years old, while the second peak is seen in 10/14 years old children)
With time, type 1 diabetes can affect major organs in the body including the heart, blood vessels, nerves, eyes and kidneys as well


Major complications may include:

Heart disease
Blood vessel disease
Nerve damage (neuropathy)
Pregnancy complications
Skin and mouth conditions (fungal and bacterial infection)
Foot damage
Eye damage
Kidney damage (nephropathy)
Prevention

There is no known way to prevent type 1 diabetes. But researches are working on preventing the disease or further destruction of the islet cells in people who are newly diagnosed.

There are know clinical trial for infected volunteers ask your doctor if you might be eligible for one of these clinical trials, but carefully weigh your options and risks also check what you gain to benefit of any treatment available in a trial
