How to Make Your Employees More Responsible Now that you have your organisational chart. The next thing on your mind is “how do I use it?” No worries love, you have come to the right place. Three words: trial and error. Yes, you just read right. Your small business for the most part is unique. Sure, you are going to come across information on what each position is supposed to do but at the end of the day, you still have to craft each position to suit your business. You already have a skeletal idea of what each position is supposed to do. You should start with that. Let’s use our previous example of the retail shop. There is the position of the sales manager. On your own, you already know that the sales manager is to ensure that the cashier does her job at the POS area: check out the customer’s purchases and package it for them. The sales manager also has to ensure that the store clerk does his job of fully stocking the shelves always. The store clerk is also responsible for signing out goods from storage. In addition to those, the store manager has to supervise the cleaner whose job is to keep the store and the inventories clean. There definitely will be more responsibilities in the future for the sales manager to handle. But at the start of your sales manager handbook (you are to have one for each job position), those are the tasks that the sales manager is supposed to perform. Every time there is an update to what the sales manager is supposed to do, your job as the owner (CEO in this case) is to add it to the handbook. After adding it to the handbook, you must send the updated version of the handbook to the sales manager. By so doing, there is no break in communication and the sales manager is well aware their duties. Ensuring that your employees know what they are supposed to do boils down to the rules of management which are planning, organising, implementing and evaluating. You have to plan what their job is supposed to be. Organise the way they are supposed to carry it out, test your plan, appraise it and repeat the process again. |
