First, I see Obi either trying to get noticed or positioning Okonjo-Iweala for 2023. Secondly, I think Obi should not just criticise govt borrowing but proffer alternative funding model to fund the govt programs. The Govt is forced to borrow to meet elections promises and of which it is already being judged not done enough. The govt is borrowing because the past regimes looted everything, and what sources of funds should the current govt access in order not to be labeled as failure finally. Aonkuuse: Former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi has revealed that state governors during the last administration shared billions among themselves.
Obi said this on Wednesday morning while analysing the state of the economy on Channels TV.
He recalled how the former Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala begged the State Governors at the time to save for the future in the Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF), a programme that was meant to save fund for the nation, but most of them refused and shared the money.
Obi said, “Over the years, things have gone wrong, I remember Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala crying every day to governors to save these monies and invest in the Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF), a programme that was meant to save fund for the nation to cater for a rainy day as presently experienced.
“All of us disagreed and said let’s share it. some governors even went to court to get the federal government to allow them to share the money among themselves. ”
Further speaking, Obi called on the federal government to stop borrowing as they keep plunging Nigeria into poverty.
“Borrowing for consumption will not grow the economy, it gets to a state where you can’t control it. The amount being used to service our debt today is high, we use almost 60% to service them and we are borrowing more, it’s escalating.
“World Bank and IMF have warned Nigeria against rising debt.
“You are borrowing money and the issues that it was supposed to affect is not coming down. Unemployment is worsening. Our unemployment rate moved from 14.8% to 18.8% this year, which means more people have lost their jobs.
“The economy is shrinking, the entire capital votes this year ‘is’ borrowed, and we have existing debts already. Poverty is increasing, out of school children have moved from 10 million to almost 12 million,” Obi added.

Kulas: Peter Obi, on Channels TV. Hear him
He debated a professor of economics in University Of Abuja and laid out solid points which earned him admiration and praises all over Nigerian media space.
Here are 10 quotes from his debate on channels.
1. “ If a man has not created wealth. He cannot manage wealth “
2. “Unemployment is worsening. In 2017 our unemployment ratio moved from 14.8% to 18.8% this year. This means that more people have lost their jobs. We can’t survive like this “
3 “You are borrowing money and the issue it was supposed to affect is not coming down. Poverty is increasing , children out of school moved from 10 million to 12 million. “
4. “ I remember Ngozi Okonjo Iweala crying everyday. Begging Us to save this monies for the rainy day. All the Governors disagreed. They said let us share it. Now we are borrowing to feed.”
5 “ All I Know is that Governance has nothing to do with age. Today the Youngest Governor in Nigeria is an Unmitigated disaster”
6. “ In a State in the North the number of children that sat for WAEC is 128. This state has about 5 million people. This is not acceptable “
7. “ I don’t have any single property in this country outside Onitsha. If you see any property outside Onitsha and they say it belongs to Mr Peter Obi. Burn it! “
8. “ When you are borrowing for consumption. It gets to a stage when you cannot control it”
9. “ Nigerians cannot aim for sky scrapers when we cannot maintain simple toilets “
10. “ I cannot pay 250,000 for one night in a hotel. I wouldn’t sleep that night. I will feel like I have been robbed. “ And one crazy dude was the other day castigating Obi of voodoo economics. I was telling the guy that Peter Obi has been a successful business man and a successful governor so he has got his onions right |

seunmsg: The usual attempt to blame the governors for Jonathan's government inability to save during an era of oil boom while absorbing the man who was the head of government. If Ngozi was serious about saving, why did she fail to save federal government's share of the money? Why did she and Jonathan squandered the huge savings that they met in the excess crude account and foreign reserve? This is just another attempt by PDP jobbers to absolve Jonathan of his failures. revolt: I still remember vividly. This stupid rotimi amaechi was the one that championed the decision by governors forum. I think oshiomole explained it this way. The cash in the SWF was meant for the state governor and the fed, but what happened was that the feds at the time were dishonest in that they were dipping their hands into the money without recourse to the other signatory to the account which is the state government. if Ameachi and oshiomole didn't shout out then for them to all share the money once and for all, there wouldnt have been any excess cash left as only the FG would have swack everything illegally and secretly. |

babaolofin: Peter Obi should have kept quiet. He is trying to defend himself & Madam Ngozi Okonjo - Iweala for the worst economic management and vengeance looting of the treasury by their people. What saved them is Emefiele at the CBN. Peter Obi is a Senior Economic Adviser to Jonathan in addition to his being Anambra State governor. With the massive looting & operations of parallel accounts by NNPC & the cry of looting by Sanusi as CBN governor before he became Emir, there is no way the governors will not go to court, otherwise, they will lose out entirely.
Peter Obi , madam okonjo - iweala & others while oil price was increasing were busy borrowing money putting Nigeria in debt. El - rufai, Sanusi as CBN governor, some renowned economists had argued against borrowing money when crude is selling at high price. They were celebrating Nigeria as the best economy in Africa to cover up looting. To test Nigeria economic resilience, the oil price fell, those people shouting Nigeria is the best economy in Africa had to borrow to pay salary before handing over to Buhari.
The worse thing, they emptied the treasury, made few strategic appointments after losing election instead of preparing handover notes to cover up loopholes. The Excess Crude oil Account that made the governors went to court still had money before the election. After handover, Oshiomhole drew buhari attention to money in ECA, huge amount has disappeared. Madam wrote from US that GEJ gave her approval to use the money to pay oil marketers subsidy. Approval without NEC, FAAC & other bodies knowledge. That was a deal. Thank God, Peter Obi might have invested part of his own in SABmiller owner of International Breweries which invested in Nigeria to generate employment.
He is not qualified to make any analysis on the economy as an adviser of Jonathan on economy, they depleted reserve inherited from Obj by almost $25 billion. They did not save one kobo despite selling crude at high price for many years. Roads in the South East is bad, contractors were owed billions of money . They left Nigeria with nothing but debt & recession. What analysis is he now making? Mr peter obi the sanctimonious hypocrite what was fg's share of the money used for shame on all of you that watched while Nigeria was being raped, enyi you have lost your relevance right from your community shame. |
