Hi guys!

@Fayimora: Busy @ skool, Exams next month.

I haven't had time to complete the levels. I've already fixed the jump code and other things. The only task remaining aside from the level is the transition. I'm thinking we could lock some levels first but I dunno, since this the game isn't really up to certain standards especially on graphics, I may leave everything so everyone can add inputs and be able to suggest things regarding all aspects of the game early. Maybe I'll upload the file when I'm home for the weekend so you guys can finish the level, Haven't checked but I think it's the third/last level that needs more work.

Ok guys.Things have gone cold lately.know why?, How do we profit from this?!

I registered a while ago when the team was just starting up but i couldn't keep up cos the idea wasn't going to put food on my table.I must sound like an antagonist but thats the fact.

If you expect people to download games onto the local machines before they get a feel of what you guys are creating then you are getting something wrong somewhere.

Now let me introduce you to someone,Benjamin Joffe. You can reach him at http://www.benjoffe.com/code.You all need to see what this guy creates armed only with a web browser and a zeal for gaming!!!.Of course, you are definitely viewing this topic with a browser.

What am i getting at?,
If just ONE guy can do that,i guess a whole country should be able to also.I am currently going through html5 canvas animation.anyone interested in the particular book should please signify.

Monetizing has just been made easier then. With apple's support for html5 applications, the target audience is wider.

Kudos to world best and game addict for keeping the thread live.If you need more guys,i think you should consider my suggestions.

By the way,i'm a php/javascript programmer.Interested only in web based technologies.

@Pheeque

Thanks for the kind words. Frankly, i agree with you, the idea certainly wont put food on the table. I think its one of the reasons (if not the major reason) while some of us lost interest. I like your idea on HTML 5. I once mentioned that we just go the browser way; Create games like mafia wars etc. At least, the workload of such games are not as heavy as that of 3D games.

Judging from what we have done so far, i think we have failed in achieving the main objective which is to create a game and sort of keep start a game development industry in Nigeria. But who says we cannot keep start it the browser way? I mean, it would not be bad if we had our own Zynga of Nigeria.

Knowing fully well that alot of Nigerians use the internet, i think it would be a good idea to make HTML 5 games. Moreso, alot of individuals are super skilled with web technologies.

Further more, we wont be talking about 3D graphics, just plane 2D. We can host the browser game on a number of platforms Facebook, IOS, Android, Google Chrome etc.

What do y'all think? We've got to start from somewhere.

If you have a lot of folks that are good with flash and flex then I think you would make a headway!
Re: Game Development: Join The Team by Pheeque(m): 11:46am On Jul 06, 2011
Html5 is changing the way we develop for the web today,i don't see why we should have flash/flex developers. Not unless of course you need a fall back environment.I still think that focus would be lost if we are talking more than one tool to develop with.

Now that i think we know what we need, anyone with the aforementioned skills(JavaScript/flash/canvas API/svg API) should signify.I am a JavaScript fanatic.any other geeks like me?

I've corrected some errors and changed certain things but I won't be able to work on anything till I'm done with my exams. I'll upload the build and the project file so anyone can download, play and change stuff.

I don't think the chest with pickups is good cuz it's too many. Someone should remove them, use the main pickups alone and add a glow/halo effect to them. The AI and level elements (graphics) also need changing. Lets edit things slowly and see how we can improve on the general idea.

  Regarding using flash or html5:

I don't think the current issue is about the programming language or tool or even money.

THE ISSUE IS THAT A LOT OF US ARE NOT DOING ANYTHING. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOUR GAME NEVER GETS COMPLETED. THE ISSUE IS THAT WE ARE JUST NOT READY. A GAMEDEV THREAD SHOULD BE FUN, I THINK. GAME IDEAS, CHARACTER IDEAS AND SKETCHES ETC. IF YOU WANT TO DO SOMETHING, DON'T WAIT FOR OTHER PEOPLE. DO WHAT YOU WANT. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF IT'S NOT PART OF THE PROJECT. JUST DO SOMETHING AND HAVE FUN WITH IT. IF YOU HAVE AN IDEA, WORK ON IT AND STOP BOTHERING ABOUT WHAT OTHERS WILL THINK. DO WHAT YOU WANT. DO SOMETHING.

I'VE EMPHASIZED PERSONAL PROJECTS AND STUFF AS A WAY TO LEARN STUFF. WHAT HAVE YOU GUYS BEEN DOING. HOW COME NO ONE IS SHARING?

IN FACT, I THINK PEOPLE SHOULD STOP SIGNING UP ON THIS THREAD TILL WE AGREE ON THE NEXT THING TO DO. SOME PEOPLE SIGN UP AND NEVER COME BACK. SOME PEOPLE DON'T DO ANYTHING. THE THREAD IS JUST GETTING LONGER AND LONGER. IF WE WANT TO DEVELOP GAMES, THEN LETS DEVELOP GAMES AND STOP WORRYING ABOUT LANGUAGES AND MONEY. A GAME DOESN'T have TO TAKE A YEAR. IT DOESN'T HAVE TO TAKE A WEEK. LETS DO SOMETHING. 2D, 3D WHATEVER. LETS JUST HAVE FUN.

EDIT : Here's the download link to the build: https://sourceforge.net/projects/naijadev/files/Vulcan-game.zip/download

The project file is large so I wont be able to upload it today. I think the main changes have to do with codes but I'm not sure. I might have to upload everything again but subsequent uploads will relate to changes alone.

Abeg, make una no vex oooh!

I have just started the following thread on Nigerian political history , compiled using mainly television news reports since 1960.

I would appreciate more sources of archive television video news for Nigeria - especially if it is embeddable on this forums.

Please give your suggestions when you visit the thread.

@addict, You have a point.I guess i'd start sharing the little things i can do with html canvas then.

This is Nigeria, brov. If u dont mention monetary gains, you are on your own o!.
Anyways, that's beside the point. It seems that you have experience creating games,i'd really appreciate it if you could show me a SIMPLE(emphasis on simple) efficient collision of to balls' detection algorithm.it doesn't matter if it is in another language as long as you use programming constructs present in most languages such as the Math object.
The ones i could lay my hands on are waayyy to complicated for your average web developer.

@worldbest HTML5 games will prove hard cuz HTML5 technologies are still experimental and not 100% compatible however Flash/Flex is a better alternative with large user base and as of 11 Flash will have access to OpenGL/D3D or except u guys wanna use Flash Player 9/10 and work with a framework like Away3d anyways i got the PDFS let me know if u are interested apparently lost interest it seems it doesn't pay for my bills and stuff, but once in a while i think it'd be fun we cud at least achieve something first on web before moving to desktop apps.

Also one more thing game creation also requires some subset of Physics and maths, really it does and it ant hard to grasp.i think making a Git is far easier than we using NL

Re: Game Development: Join The Team by gameaddict(m): 2:11am On Aug 04, 2011
@ pheeque:

If the balls are not too fast, a simple method of checking 2D collision would be as follows

  1: Get the X and Y positions of each ball;

WHY? We will use them to get the distance (or hypotenuse) between both balls(points).

   2:  Calculate the Hypotenuse/Distance:

We know that our 2D grid is the cartesian or XY plane and we can easily draw a right angled triangle to join our points.

        If ball 1 is at (x = 2, y = 4) and ball 2 is at (x =  6,  y = 10), all we have to do is draw our horizontal line from x2 (2 on the x axis, 4 on the y axis) to

x6(6 on the x axis, 4 on the y axis). From here, we draw our vertical line to upwards from x6 to y10(10 on the y axis). We can complete our triangle

easily by joining our endpoint to x2 with a straight line  grin. This line is our hypotenuse. To get the value, use the next step.

2b: Apply Pythagoras theorem: "The square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides". All we have to do is square the x

x and y values of our triangle. But what are the values? Note that the horizontal line of our triangle starts from x2 to x6, it's length is therefore 6 - 2

       (ie suppose we are using ball 2 to check collision : ball2.x - ball1.x and our y value is ball2.y - ball1.y).

       Pythagoras [H^2 or distance^2 = x^2 + y^2]

3: Get the radius of each circle, add them together and square the result. You defined the radius of each one using

canvas_context.arc(blah, blah,  tongue  radius, blah, 0, Math.PI * 2, true). lets denote the result as R^2.

4: We now know the square of our distance, We know the square of the sum of the radius of both circle, all we have have to do now is compare them

If( distance^2 < R^2) a collision has occurred. We give the ball a random velocity to simulate realistic collision.

5: okay, step 4 and others involve some more work for efficiency and realism. We'll work on them as we progress.

Why bother yourself with that when a game engine would easily take care of all that for you, leaviing you to worry only about the design of the actual game.

why use a game engine when you dnt understand the basics? Anyways to do anything effective interms of collision or motion in general, you have yo remember your physics. Go back to your physics and see what happens when 2 balls collide. Inspect everything. Hint: What happens to the distance between them ?

All this experimentation has already being done by the people that created the engine. For Example when you create your objects in an enging, you can just assign any physics property you want it to have without necessarily knowing how it works.

How a metal/ball/wood/human being should react when it hits another object has already been integrated, you just have to choose.

it's just like saying "why use c++ when you don't understand how it's being compiled to machine language". Sm1 has already done that work so you can spend your own time on greater things.
Re: Game Development: Join The Team by gameaddict(m): 7:06pm On Aug 06, 2011
I think he's experimenting with html5. Besides, knowing the stuff makes using any engine easier if you understand the concept underlying what you are doing. I'm also going to study as much physics as I can this holiday cuz the knowledge is gonna be useful.

Thats not my point. My point is, you invent the wheel before using an already built one cheesy
