We know that flooding can happen at any time of the year. Floods occur when the input of water is greater than drainage can take away. These can be caused by heavy local rainfalls or by a river bursting its banks from rain upstream.

How to Cross the Flooded Area

The best advice is "avoid" if you can find a solution that doesn’t involve driving through flood, you minimize the risk to both you and your car

If you decide to go through approach the flood water at no more than 5kph in first gear. Keeping the engine revs up (by slipping the clutch in a manual car) to avoid water entering the exhaust pipe

You should avoid driving through more than 6 inches of standing water or more than four inches of moving water. To be sure that there is still road underneath the water

Is the water still rising? If so, are you putting yourself in danger? Remember that your vehicle is replaceable, where’s as your aren’t

See how another car gets on, and then proceed with caution

Don’t speed as going at speed can push water into the engine and can cause a bow wave which can wash into other vehicles, other people’s property and soak pedestrians

Also if you are following another vehicle, wait for it to clear the flood. If it stalls or becomes stranded you don’t want to be trapped behind it as it will be very difficult to reverse out of the flood

Note: If water should get into the engine bay (bonnet) and find it way to the piston it can bend the connecting rod because water can’t be compressed and also it can short out electrics
