Christmasdon: FRCN is the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria. FRCN owns and operates the Radio Nigeria Stations ( I hope Radio Nigeria 2 etc are still existing ). FRCN's headquarters is located in Ikoyi, Lagos. FRCN has a training school. My brother attended FRCN's training school and obtained a Certificate from the place. FRCN should have courses in Radio broadcasting, Radio Management and Production and associated Courses like Advertising and Public Relations. Use Google to find out more about the FRCN Training School. The Nigerian Institute of Journalism ( NIJ ) is an accredited Institution that offers Courses in Journalism, Public Relations, Advertising, Broadcasting ( I heard NIJ now has good quality broadcasting facilities ), Marketing etc. They have these Courses at Ordinary Diploma and HND levels. I think they also have Postgraduate Diploma Courses at NIJ. NIJ is more of a private institution, but it is recognized by all the Media outlets in Nigeria. NIJ Certificates are respected in Nigeria and other parts of the World, especially Africa. NIJ prepares you to be independent in nature and self sustaining. After graduating from NIJ, you should be able to start your own Media Organization on a small scale. I attended NIJ, so I know what I am saying. Studying Journalism exposes you to a lot of things. Journalism can be lucrative if you know how to go about it. Stay Blessed. 2 Likes |

[quote author=Uchenaija post=71066285] Please, can you provide a little more details on the NIJ? How much is the programme? How long is it? Do you they have a number of courses? What's the difference between it and Federal Radio Cooperation Training School & also reading English or mass comm in a university? Hi, I feel you should go to NIJ itself to get updated information about the institution. www.nij.edu.ng However, i need to tell you some things from experience. You can't compare a graduate from the Nigerian Institute of Journalism ( NIJ ) with a graduate of Mass Communication from Universities and Polytechnics in Nigeria. They are Worlds apart. NIJ graduates are well drilled and taught properly than Communication students from other institutions. At NIJ, you are the fundamentals of News Writing, Broadcasting, Advertising etc. NIJ is a specialized school, unlike Universities and Polytechnics in Nigeria where you take general courses along with your Course of study. They don't also teach deeply at Universities in Nigeria. At NIJ, you are able to focus on Communication courses and you are not saddled with too much Courses. Cheers. 2 Likes |

Redman44: You are right bro, I just finished my Post Graduate Diploma course in journalism and I must confess that it really worth it. At times, I do wish I never went to the University to study a course I will hardly practice because journalism is an inspiring and exciting career. I used to admire the ND and HND students of the NIJ because they are vast in journalism already. In addition, the OP can enroll for a course at school of journalism while he join a media outlet as an intern. He will be able to be putting his knowledge into practice during his course of learning and he can even be lucky to employed into that media outlet during the course of interning. This has really been helpful to me. I appreciate the aspect where you talked about specializing in a particular beat of journalism because the world of journalism is getting saturated already. Yeah, that's the way to go, if you can't get yourself employed in a media outlet. You can just choose any beat and start blogging on it consistently and before you know it, you are at the apex already. Climate change, energy, education, health are niches begging for attention. News and entertainment gist is over saturated already. Eventhough, Mainstream media outlets that produces Newspapers are going into extinction already but we have some online media outlets that are replacing them and also absorbing extraordinary journalists into the profession. Investigative journalism is another aspect of journalism that is selling in Nigeria. You can be a freelance investigative journalism and be making your money steadily. 3 Likes |

Neyoor: Thanks, My Brother. You now have a Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism from NIJ. You will surely be successful as a Journalist if you know what you are doing. NIJ trains you to be an entrepreneur in the Media business. The Nigerian Institute of Journalism ( NIJ ) is a place that not only trains you to be a well grounded Media Professional and a Information Researcher, but you are unconsciously trained to be innovative in many different aspects of life. 75% of my Classmates at NIJ are doing well not only as Media Professionals, but as Movie Producers, Businessmen and Businesswomen, Actors and Actresses, PR Specialists etc. You can also publish niche Magazines and Newspapers online and offline to make good money as a Journalist. Think of Success Digest by Sunny Obazu Ojeagbase etc. The Education sector in Nigeria needs specialized Magazines that can cover that sector. You can start with 1000 copies of your quality Education Magazine and go to Schools physically to introduce your publication to Proprietors and Proprietresses, Headmasters, Principals etc. Just start from there. Ditto for the Catering and Hospitality Sectors in Nigeria. God bless you, My Brother. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Uchenaija: Average of 150 to 230k. I just finished the Post Graduate Course. They pay per semester and the total price for the two semesters can't exceed that. 1 Like |

Hausa:Thanks for the care. By resources i mean the Time and Money. I already have a first degree in Biochemistry. But Journalism is something I'm passionate about i only just discovered a little late. Though am yet to get a stable job but i have other things i do to keep the body and soul together and these things are really taking all my time. I still believe I'll make a grandstand in this industry |
