My colleague's husband had to relocate to Canada because he was tired of seeing needless death in Luth. He is a doctor that will come home crying sometimes because of his experience at work [LUTH] almost on daily basis.

There is so much ugly experiences in Luth. A friend almost beat the staff when his wife wanted to give birth, he sworn never to step on Luth again. My boss was on ground crying when his wife was put on a mere plank because there was no bed.

Took my daughter there once, and I didn't spend 5 minutes because you can go there with a mere headache and come back with typhoid fever. I didn't stay long there also because the who place was crowded, consulting rooms looked unkept, waiting rooms feel like ovens.

My wife's friend who is a doctor there advised us to avoid Luth..............Lifeline in Surulere, though expensive is where I used for my kids before I changed to Jolad.

This same negligence killed my elder brother in LASUTH Ikeja. We had everything they wanted. Just to conduct test, they delayed for many hours.

It was when my brother died they requested for autopsy..

I would never advice anyone to visit any of the teaching hospitals. They are death-homes

What Bubu has spent abroad (about N500million) cannot adequately fund one teaching hospital for the year. (OAUTH budget a few years ago was N10billion).

Now, I want all our leaders to stay at home ad get treated....but the truth is, if we want good facilites....like they have in the UK or US ....we either pay heavy taxes, or hope oil goes above $140 PER BARREL...and increase hospital fees into the bargain.

Lord knows I was no PDP fan, and I am not an APC fan....but the reality is, Nigeria is not a rich country...which is why Bubu should have taken more measures to actively diversify our economy.

Another angle is the horrible population. The population is just too much for the resources available. We are wretched yet because of sex and cheap pleasure we continue to add more people to our already incredible misery. Go to maternity wards across the country and see people who can barely feed themselves having babies left right and centre.

We are just too poor for normal life.

Honestly, this is so touching. I have never been this touched in a while. Nigeria health care system and facility is in shamble at the moment. Many of these doctors have forgotten the Hippocratic oath they took before they became doctors. Saving lives should be their primary focus and all cases should be considered emergency to them. I can remember vividly when I was still in Nigeria. I was rushed to the hospital one day late in the night. On getting there, the nurse that we met was pregnant and was reluctant in attending to me. She later told me to come back the following day that the doctor at duty wasn't around. She told me to go and use paracetamol that I will be OK. I was almost crying. How can Nigerians be this heartless, "I said in my mind." That was the day I knew that our lives are not safe in the hands of Nigerian medical practitioners. I went home sad that day, facing the realities of life all alone. Nigerian hospitals couldn't save my life when I needed them most.

If what just happened had been in the Western world, the doctor on duty will be charge to court. A suit will be filed against him based on his own negligence. I've even seen in an Indian movie where a doctor was given 25 years imprisonment due to some petty negligence by the doctor. It was just a common surgery that was to be conducted on a minor. Due to negligence of the mother, the child ate an hour to the operation as opposed to the conventional rule of not eating 6 hours to any medical surgery. The doctor was later told by a ward nurse but because he was on call, he was carried away. They did the operation successfully but after few minutes, the food the child ate backed up to his throat and was turned into a poison. That was how they started running helter-skelter, trying to evacuate the food from his throat "something they should have done before commencing the surgery." The child later died and all effort by the doctor to bury the case in the court of law was proved abortive by his fellow doctors and the mother of the child. Though the mother caused everything. But the doctor was the one that served the jail time. If our judiciary sector is still functioning in Nigeria, the hospital should be charged to court ASAP while the family of the deceased should also hire a human right activist.

I don watch the film..

Bro, why are you bothering yourself debating with that daft boy? If you know the daft boy well on Nairaland, he doesn't care about the story! In fact, he's actually happy the innocent person died same way he's always happy whenever he hears there's violent killings in the north, simply because he needs these things to play dirty politics for his beloved PDP! A heartbroken man has narrated how his brother passed away at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) due to the alleged negligence of medical personnel. According to the bereaved identified as Yommy, his brother named Segun (pictured below) died at the hospital despite all the screams from him that the case was an emergency.

He alleged that the hospital officials ignored him for hours and later attended to his brother but by that time, it was already late. His brother passed away in his arms.

Read below what the heartbroken man shared on Facebook;

All the General Hospital in Nigeria is nothing but a dead zone center where every patient is not sure of coming back alive. Their nonchalant attitude killed my brother. We got to navy town hospital they said no facilities to treat him that we should go to Lagos university teaching hospital.(Luth) we got there around after six(6).

We were shouting emergency emergency emergency nobody answered not even the security were moved. Then I call a matron working there she was off duty but did her best to call some people on duty. Despite are call they didn't answer.  my brother was struggling for breath in held him telling him the we never plan to depart this way.

He was calling my name and other peoples name. I was shouting doctor pls nurse pls don't let my brother die. they didn't answer even people around that brought patients they said that is how they use to do.

All efforts was abortive my brother struggled for more than 5 hours. It was even inside the small shuttle bus inside the hospital compound they gave him drip. All what they requested for we gave them. It was past 8 my brother stop struggling he became weak couldnt breath again was just moving his legs.

That was when they brought their bed for us to put him Inside it was not up to 10 minutes I was asked to control myself that my brother is gone.

They killed my brother because he wasn't given attention despite having money to purchase all they requested for. My GOD will judge them all. Segun rest on and sleep well I will forever miss you. Sun re.

May his soul rest in peace.

I can feel your pain. I had this horrible experience exactly 3 years ago with General hospital, Ifako-Ijaiye, LASUTH and LUTH on a single day.

I took my younger brother to Ifako on emergency. No competent hands, so I was referred to LASUTH, where they said there is no bed and was referred to LUTH. At LUTH, it took several hours before they came to take his BP under the sun in an open place. Imagine someone who is weak already. After this, they said there is no bed, but told me to go and see if I can get from a private facility within the complex. The place too was already filled up.

It took the grace of God and a friend who later recommended a private hospital after we've wasted several hours looking for health solution from government hospital.

Since then, I never prayed that they take even my enemy, talk less of a friend to any Lagos government hospital.

They are all death trap full of arrogant medical elements!

Really touching story, it's really sad he had to go this way.
One thing everyone should know is that, you can not really be blaming doctors all the time, blame the poor system which is essentially the government's fault.

You cannot give a bricklayer only sand and water and expect him to build a mansion. He'll fail to even mould simple blocks.

If you should go and bring the all loving and caring Western doctors to come and work here, they'll perform much much worse than our doctors here, in fact they won't want to work at all.

Our leaders have failed us, and it's showing in every single sector. Such a shame.

It's quite unfortunate for you and the hospital!

Unfortunate for you because you lost your brother.

Unfortunate for the hospital because they've saved thousands of patients this year that don't grace nairaland front page.

It's the duty of the hospital to save patients if actually they have saved thousands of patients this year.
Why couldn't they save this one or make significant efforts at saving this patient.

What is an emergency hospital clinic for if not for life threatening emergency cases such as the one the OP narrated.

Not until we respect the rule of law where carelessness such as this are thoroughly investigated and the hospital management made to pay a huge fine to the victim's family for their negligence.

It is disheartening what is seen in Nigerian Hospitals, the day I visited Federal Medical Centre That was the first time I saw patients dying unnecessarily

God save us, when they die, you must pay for the Medical services and for the bed even before they release the corpse

Nope....the issue is we need at least 2 trillion naira if not more to fund the health care sector properly.

We also need to increase taxes, ESPECIALLY since oil is not as high as we need it.

It is not a defence of Bubu...it is the sad cold fact.

The truth is....you want good health care, you have to pay for it. The UK spends billions of pounds on health care...far more than Nigeria's budget for the year. And much of that cash comes from high taxes.

I won't mind if we vote out APC...but the thing is....health care is very very expensive. Workers are poorly paid. And there isn't enough cash for facilities.
Oga, it is not about funding healthcare, it's simply about attitude towards work in govt establishments. If you like spend gazillion dollars in the health sector, with lackadaisical attitude as narrated by the OP, there won't be positive result.
