So until now, the country wasn't monitoring seismic activities and movement?

This is quite shameful.

dumbo!

If he bothered to read up the news on earthquake activities just yesterday, he will have realized that the number and magnitude of the earthquakes recorded in Japan, Fiji Islands, Ecuador, Argentina, Peru, Chile, Paraguay, Iran, the ring of fire, etc was enough to send tremors across the whole world. Not repeating some idiotic lines about rock blasting which had been ruled out by FEMA after investigations.

Are you a geologist or geophysicist? You have absolutely no idea about earthquake monitoring. Siesmometers are basic hazard monitoring tools. You can even monitor and study quakes in neighbouring countries or far away haiti for research purposes and develop better safety procedures related to your "illegal stone mining" tremor claim. It will shock you that Germany, England, France Probably South Africa, and other serious nations have genuine data on the Mpape quake. Do they have earthquakes prevalent in their countries? and you are here saying no need. smh. Lets call a spade its name. These guys are plain incompetent. How can you have a geological survey agency without seimometer? I doubt if the rain guages at metrological agency are functioning.

If the country isn't along any known fault lines, it isn't necessary.
The Abuja incident was caused by UNREGULATED quarrying.
There is a lot of stone mining in Abuja, with explosives being used in underground caves.
It is the same as illegal sand mining or dredging in the south causing gully erosions.
It's like purchasing Hurricane minioting equipment.
The purchase is a waste of N50m.
Mining should be regulated properly.

Its indeed shameful, this was exactly the same thing on my mind. The fact that in 2018, we still aren't proactive enough in quite a number of basic areas for citizen protection baffles me. If things had gotten more serious than this, Nigeria would have been caught unprepared.

We are under no threat of experiencing earthquake, there's no need to monitor siesmatic activities unless of course we want to waste money. They only need to stop illegal mining and blasting of rocks

You are right but I do not mean seismic activities only, there should be monitoring for other geologic processes that can cause natural disasters just so we can be adequately prepared always. These things are budgeted for anyway and they aren't doing much as it is.

I am an event planner.
With the budgetary constraints in the country, that N50m is a waste. We currently don't have business owning such equipments.
We can buy these info or data from all these 1st world countries you mentioned, instead of us spending N50m and change to buy equipments for plain incompetent guys you identified.
Would you also want us to invest in wind tunnel testing facilities, or car crash test facilities... It's not expedient for us as a nation right now.
It's also rude to "SMH" towards anyone in public while trying to have public discourse we can all learn from.
Make your point. Keep the innuendos.

Hehe, dude just read a few Wikipedia article n using it to cajole the media. Fortunately for us, we don't fall in the earthquake zone. Also, you don't just buy 6 equipments for the purpose of satisfying Federal character cheesy. Our people be like, let us buy 6 machines, one for each geopolitical zones so there won't be screams of marginalizations.

Unfortunately, we can only make guesses on the actual cause. That old man is lieing tho. How come they were able to buy equipments just within two days, did they just take a stroll down to Alana market?

On the contrary tho, geologists are not the only people who can monitor earthquakes. civil engineers n geophysists can, and employing a PhD holder with foreign training is the best for stuffs like this.

I believe you know Tectonics, Geophysics and Structural Geology are all part of Geology grin grin grin So when I use the term Geologist I am referring to a multi-disciplinary team. The basement complex is exclusive to the north and a few extension to the south east. They are really joking with their six geopo crap. I've seen the NEMA observatory in Rivers state and it's inhabited by snakes. They one around Etche

You don't need a PhD holder to monitor trends or take readings. In complex interpretations yes. My statement is based on our emphasis on paper qualification in the country.

The Federal Government has spent N50million to procure Earthquake Monitoring Seismograms to enable it fully monitor ground disturbances in Nigeria.Director General of Nigerian Geological Survey Agency, NGSA, Dr. Alex Nwegbu, at a media conference in Abuja, yesterday, said the equipment would be installed in the six geo-political zones.

Nwegbu, who made a presentation on the recent earth tremor in Mpape, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), maintained that there was no cause for alarm and called on the residents not to panic. He explained that a team of geologists and geophysicists was already on a fact-finding mission, saying that earthquakes tend to be concentrated in particular zones.

The director general maintained that many of such earthquakes have been reported in Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Cameroun, though largely unsubstantiated, had been in parts of Nigeria, adding: “Earthquakes could be generally defined as a sudden vibration, sometimes violent, of the earth’s surface that follows a release of elastic energy in the earth’s crust.”

He stated that a sudden dislocation of the crust generates this energy when the built up stress exceeds the strength of the rock mass, adding that it is called seismic waves, noting: “This preliminary investigation, therefore, associate the tremor to quarrying activities in the area, which involve intense blasting that led to stress accumulation. Mpape is yet to be established.”
He, however, said the agency was keeping a close monitoring team to have a detailed survey in the area, involving reflection seismic and gravity measurement, to fully unravel immediate and remote causes of the tremor.

I know they will buy this one because earthquake doesn't know the poor nor the rich and Abuja ( Maitama) is majorly surrounded by the rich so they will take all necessary steps to prevent any future occurrence.

If its areas like karu or masaka no proactive step could have been taken.

This is a sped-up lie created so the government can save face. If it was true, the machine would get shown in pictures.
If we needed to purchase a machine specifically for this work then what was the Nigcomsat for? Part of its role is the monitoring of seismic activities.
This country is truly a zoo.

These guys are just giving out generic causes of the tremors. I've been expecting to read comments from the FIELD GEOLOGISTS

If there are faults, what are their names? which formation is hosting them? what's their age? any lateral equivalence in nearby states? These and many more are questions that needs to be answered. Buying a siesomogram is not the issue, the problem is manning the equipment and paying the personnel who are likely supposed to be residing at the base stations.

If you apply as a geologist now to FEMA one m0ron will ask if you've PhD

Well the field geologists that we here are textbook geologists. They may not be able to tell you much cos I don't think we have experienced such in recent memory.

We're in a country with a REACTIVE CULTURE as against the PREVENTIVE CULTURE obtainable in other climes.

Sure we do have geologists that can handle such.
