This is the moment nine lionesses brutally attacked a lion in front of horrified visitors.

Shocking footage shows the pack of females tearing their teeth into the leader of the pride's flesh at West Midlands Safari Park.

The lionesses then drag him from the rocks into the water where he is seen helplessly roaring in pain.



Safari workers at the enclosure in Bewdley, Worcs., had to step in and spray fire extinguishers at the beasts to break up the ferocious attack after the male was left covered in blood.

It is conceivable the lionesses were trying to kill their leader because he was too old to run the pride.

However Mya Beverstock, who caught the attack on film, said the females may have pounced on him after a dispute over food.

She said: "It pretty much happened out of the blue. It was feeding time and then suddenly we heard growling and roaring.

"Two other males stepped back and didn't get involved while the females attacked the leader. He may have ate before his turn."

She added:"Safari workers dealt with it very quickly. Three jeeps ended up in the enclosure honking their horns and driving towards the lions to break them up.

"One of the jeeps sprayed them with a fire extinguisher which ended up mostly breaking up the fight.

"We did go around the park again afterwards and all the female lions had been removed from the enclosure and it was only the three males in there."

Luckily, the lion who was pounced on survived the brutal attack.

Actually this looks to me like a very rare occurrence in the wild. I'm a passionate lion observer (Natgeo wild o ) and what was aired in that video could be either of two things: 1. a pride takeover gone wrong or more rarely 2. a revolt/revolution.
While pride takeover is more common in "liondom" it is unlikely in this case because the male was too docile. A young virile male goes for a pride takeover as a do or die affair. A suicide mission of sorts. He engages the pride male and either kills him or runs him off. Almost automatically the pride females submit to his brutal authority. Resistance does occur many times from pride females when their natural maternal instincts are triggered especially when they have cubs who will be immediately killed by the incoming male to make the females immediately receptive to his mating needs and also secure his rule long-term. This resistance is however weighed with common sense. A male lion is almost twice as strong as a typical female. As much as possible lionesses avoid such confrontations because a single blow from the paws of a virile male can mar the hunting life of a female and the worth of a lioness in the pride is her ability to contribute meaningfully to the hunting experience. She becomes useless to herself, her cubs and the entire pride once this is compromised. Rampaging male lions know this and will readily maim and even kill any lioness that resists. Don't forget there's no familiarity or bond yet, just extreme brute strength and raging hormones.
2. Pride revolt appears more likely in this video footage for the simple fact that there was no backlash from the male. No attack whatsoever. That implies too much familiarity. That's certainly not a trait of a usurping raging male. He was more or less appealing to their sense of empathy and logic _{guys no try us when we vex o} it therefore seems to me like he was weak and could no longer be seen as being able to fully perform his customary duty of protecting the pride yet was still laying claim to the lionshare of the kill. Lions don't take nonsense for long if at all. That buttresses the feeding time claim by the park attendants.

THE LION IS NOT FIGHTING OR ATTACKING THEM BACK, THEY COULDN'T EVEN BITE HIM WELL BECAUSE HIS NACK IS PROTECTED BY THE ''MANE''

THE MANE IS THE ONLY THING THAT MADE LION KING OF JUNGLE EVEN THOUGH TIGERS AND BIG LEOPARDS NO SEND.

TIGER IS STRONGER THAN LION AND WILL DEFEAT LION WITHOUT MANE AT ANYTIME. THOUGH THEY DON'T NORMALLY FIGHT.

LEOPARD IS MY FAVORITE BIG CAT, LION CAN'T DEFEAT BIG LEOPARD OR ANY LEOPARD OF HIS SIZE.

LEOPARD HAS THE BEST DEFENSE TACTIC AND IS THE BEST HUNTER IN THE WILD
