Asiwaju not supporting any aspirant –Hamzat

By Muritala Ayinla 

The last may not have been heard of the controversies trailing the second term bid of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State as Asiwaju Bola Tinubu reportedly told the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christians Church of God, Pastor Adeboye, that he (Tinubu), will not prevail on any of the aspirants to step down.

This was as one of the aspirants and former Commissioner for Works and Infrastructural Development, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat confirmed Tinubu’s stance on the September 26 primary, saying the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has no anointed candidate among the contenders.

Saturday Telegraph authoratively gathered that Pastor Adeboye’s intervention is one of the latest moves by Ambode to persuade Tinubu to support his second term bid just like he did in 2015.

It was learnt that the revered Christian leader had inquired through telephone conversation with Tinubu to know how the issue of the APC primary could be resolved.

But the former governor insisted on direct primaries in the interest of fairness and justice for those who had obtained the APC forms for governorship primary in the party.

Although the telephone conversation, which had been converted into a text was silent on what Pastor Adeboye said, Tinubu was quoted to have maintained his posture that all contenders should go to the field and test their popularity before the people they want to govern.

The APC leader said he had been accused of imposition in the past and would not want to be seen as imposing any aspirant on the people in line with what democracy entails. Tinubu in the text message which was going viral on twitter told Pastor Adeboye that: “Sir, people have been accusing me of imposition.

They say I imposed candidates at will.
That’s why I said all aspirants including the governor to get to the field and test their popularity among the people in an open contest of direct primaries.

“Sir, my hands are tied on his matter, I cannot ask those who have picked the expression of interest and nomination forms to withdraw or not contest. That will be greatly unfair. We will ensure a level-playing ground for all the governorship aspirants including the incumbent governor.”

A source close to Tinubu, who chose to be anonymous because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, confirmed that there was a conversation between the APC leader and Pastor Adeboye on Ambode’s second term.
He said: “It’s true that baba (Pastor Adeboye) had intervened and Asiwaju also responded.

It is not in doubt that Asiwaju has a tremendous respect for the man of God and this is clear from his response. I will leave you to interpret his response and decide whether Asiwaju will ask one aspirant to step down for another.”

Meanwhile, Hamzat has said politicians will tell all forms of lies to create impressions that they have been anointed by the party’s national leader, saying that the former governor had promised to ensure a level playing field among them.

Hamzat said: “That was exactly what he (Tinubu) told me too. That was exactly what I am saying. He has said it publicly, so behind him, people can say anything. You will see all sorts of thing flying in the newspapers and social media that are not true. That is what we know.

He has said it repeatedly to everyone. He said it to me personally that he has no chosen candidate. Everybody should go and contest, should go and meet the people and talk to them and that is what I will do.”

Asked if he was not worried by the claim of the supporters of Babjide Sanwo- Olu that he has the blessing of Tinubu, Hamzat said: “Well I can only speak base on what I know. I met the national leader one-on-one and what he told me was what he said publicly.

He also said it at a stakeholders’ meeting that he doesn’t have a candidate. So, everybody can say whatever they like but you know, all the candidates will say they have his backing.”

Oba ran ni ise, odo oba kun. Ise oba kose maje, odo oba kose to ri bo.
Dilemma! I must say.
I don't know how things will play out later because I am not privy to the discussion table, but as things stand now, Amobode's popularity and discerned public opinions clearly signal that no one,not even Tinubu, can contest against him in this govenorship election and win irrespective of his political party.

The reason is simple: People's loyalty.
Though Ambode has his shortcomings, Lagosians are passionate about his second term.

But the simple truth is that they all must test their popularity. If there truly is an existent problem between Ambode and Tinubu, I do not think there should be any cause for much worry by Ambode. One day very soon a pharaoh does does not know Joseph will rise up and uproot 'tingod' Tinubu and teach him that power belongs to God. A direct primary will afford the governor more opportunity to self examine and look at ways to improve in his second tenure. My sincere hope is that he will not act the common way of governors on the second tenure who stop projects and amass personal wealth. I strongly believe that Ambode will defeat all opositions including the 'tingod'.

Huge mistake. Tinubu is making a huge mistake. He will lose Lagos if he continues like this.

Did anybody notice how close the governorship votes were in 2015?

Something that hasn't happened since 1999 is about to take place and it will shock Tinubu.

See how God works ... despite Ambode Good work for lagosians.. is most likely for him not to win the second term simply because ...he refused to honor God as he sacked the Chaplain of the Government house overnight with 24 hours notice .. that was too bad of him and I surely know God is punishing him and not Tinubu because who is Tinubu a mere rougue

You only hear from Adeboye when his position or any of his ministry's financiers' position is threatened.

Did Adeboye make any STATEMENT when his Deaconess was killed in Abuja or Bridget killed in Kano?

What STATEMENT has he made to identify with persecuted, displaced and bereaved Christians in the middle belt since the government he supported came into power?

By statement, I mean 'actions' & strong statements that shake government and enemies of the Christian faith.

Calling Adeboye a Christian leader is an insult to the Christian faith. He's at best RCCG (denominational) leader, and it's time the media stopped referring to him as a (National) Christian leader.

Why is Ambode running from pillar to post, if your first tenure is good, your popularity should win you the primaries and if your party is saying no 2nd term for you, port to another camp and leverage on your good works but unfortunately you have none.

The people will remember how u turned lagos to a dirty state with your visionless scape

The people will remember how you suddenly increased land use charge

How u started several projects without completion in sight.

Lagos roads are so terrible that we spend valuable time in traffic

Your lack the grass root touch of governance.

Look why is Ambode even afraid. Even with the so called Mandate group influence APC could only win lagos by 100,000 votes. It was a very close call. Lagosians are enlightened people. Just get yourself to the poll by any means possible on any platform and you woukd be returned. No need to bow to senseless powers....

Ambode polled a total of 811,994 votes to beat Agbaje, who had 659,788 votes in the last election (Source: Vanguard) in spite the wide support from Tinubu and his gang, with an expansive celebrity endorsements and media campaign from APC media centre.

Agbaje did it in 2015. Move to another party, ensure you win at least 3/4 of the incoming state house members to your side, and enjoy a smooth tenure.

This is not the time to beg some godfathers but the time to liberate Lagos state from a longstanding political idolatry
