Two guys are walking down the street when a mugger
approaches them and demands their money. They both grudgingly pull out

Lets say one guy has only $20 in his pocket and he owes his friend $20, he would give his friend the $20 while the thief is there so that he can say that he already paid his friend what he owes him and that the thief stole the money from his friend not him. i.e he ends up not losing any money and his friend loses $20 dollar more.
