Fib's grandma shape shifted to take Lillian's form.
Lillian was a student who just moved into a house off campus.

Chapter Twenty three

Throughout Sunday, I practiced my mind control tricks outside the house. But during training, I kept drifting back to Aaron, the site, Bailey and Lillian.

As for her peeling face, it scared the breath out of me. The more I thought of it, the more everything made no sense. Who killed Bailey? In fact, I'd checked Lillian's place, partly to apologize and to also find out more about her dog.

But, she brushed it aside. She didn't let me in though. I did the whole apology thing at her doorstep. I didn't get why she wouldn't let me in. Yes, questioning her about her dog's death set her off, still it's not that bad.

Even as I sat down in class on a Monday morning, my body and mind won't cooperate. We had Biology for first period and as usual, she yelled as if someone stuck rodo in her eyes.

Sighing, I scrolled through the doomsday site for the 100th time. It's been long something was posted and the only feed on the site was Leinad's and Aaron's conversation.

Just as I planned to click the lock button on my phone, it vibrated and a message from Aaron popped up.

Looking pretty.

I smiled, stared at the screen for a moment then looked around until my eyes landed on him. He sat at the left back corner of the classroom and wore a hooded, grey sweater. It's no surprise he didn't zip up, harmattan was gradually rolling out. I waved at him then sent Same to him. A soft smile crept up his face and for a second, my tummy erupted with butterflies.

But on his face, something else seemed not to be right. The skin around his lips was purple like someone punched him.

As soon as class ended, I walked between a bunch of my classmates who laughed and talked to one another.

"Hey!" I said as he shifted to create a space for me to sit. "How you doing?"

"Good," Aaron smiled one more time as his piercing eyes bore into mine. "You?"

"Same... What happened?" I pointed to his face. As I got a closer looked, the bruises looked worse. His upper lip was red from blood clot. "Did someone do this to you?"

The smile on his lips dropped. He rubbed his palm over his face, glanced around then put his earpiece on. I swear, my insides boiled as I pinched my lips into a thin hard line.

The urge to yank the earpiece out of his ears enveloped me.

Instead of doing anything stupid, I glanced around. At the doorway, Chima and the twins stood there and glared at Tokunbo as she walked out of the class. For some time now, the case had been reversed and Tokunbo became the subject of ridicule. The rumour going around was that she'd slept with Makinde.

At the front of the class, next to the window, Makinde, Eric and his clique laughed at something most likely stupid. As usual, Ronald with the linked, bushy brows danced like an idiot at the front of the class. Mo told me she wasn't feeling good, so she skipped school.

I glanced at my phone and growled. In ten minutes, another teacher will come in, giving me less chance to find out what's wrong with him. I looked back at him. His face held no expression as he stared into the distance and bobbed his head. No matter how much kept his emotions in check, I knew something was wrong. Why won't he tell me?

Use your power. A small voice said in my head and I couldn't help but mentally scold myself. Why didn't I think of this?

Glancing back at him, I channelled my strength, concentrating like Amara taught me. I'd only tried it with animals, so it's understandable if it got difficult to get anything out of him. At first, an electric shock ran through my veins, making my eyes water. Before I could even take my mind off my intention, a jumble of voices hit me at once, making me stumble off my sit. Screams went off as the ceiling turned in circles.

Aaron knelt next to me, pulling his earpiece off at the same time. My head went blank for a second. But as soon as many people stood over me, I pushed myself off the ground.

"Get her to the clinic!" someone shouted.

"No.. no, don't."

"But..."

"Aaron, just help me up."

He didn't argue. And the rest of the people surrounding me went back to what they were doing.

A few drops of blood streamed out of my nostrils and dotted the table. He gasped next to me, holding my arm in place.

"Fib, you're bleeding."

"Yes," I sniffed, trying to stop the blood from flowing. "I'll be fine." It happens when I stress my power, I wanted to add but shut up.

"It happened once, remember? That day at the stairs?" Aaron's warm fingers grazed my palm. " You need a check up--"

"No! What I need to know is what the hell happened to your face."

"That's not your business," he snarled as he removed his hand from mine.

The skin where he touched felt warm, but I ignored the feeling. This guy never stopped serving me cold and warm. No matter what I did, Aaron had one thing or the other he was hiding.

"Then don't tell what to do," I pushed up, staggering for a second before gaining my stand. "I'm sick and tired of you treating me like a piece of dirt. I've been trying to make things work between us. What then do you want? Why do you like keeping things in."

He reached for me but I backed away.

"There's a lot of things you won't get," he said. "I want to tell you but--"

"Aaron Oni," the familiar voice of the principal boomed through the classroom. I glanced at him then back at Aaron. "Your father is in my office."

Aaron said nothing, but his face which turned cold and deadly told me something was wrong. The principal didn't wait for him to get up before turning away to leave.

"I-I... need to go," he kissed me on the cheek. "Later."

For some minutes, I stood at a spot and stared at the doorway through which Aaron left. His cold gaze when the principal called him sent shivers down my spine. The bruises on his face made my chest clench.

My phone went off like an annoyed rattlesnake, pulling me out of my thoughts. I scooped it up to see a message from Mo. The message comprised two screenshots.

What a family! Mo wrote. Without dwelling on her text, I clicked the first image. Aaron's timeline came on the screen, but his cute picture wasn't much of a concern compared to what he wrote.

slowpoke keeps deceiving people with good deeds when he hardly even cares about his family. His wife is his punching bag. The bastard has too many secrets. YOU ARE NOT MY FATHER.

I gasped. Aaron referred to his father as a bastard.

In seconds, I downloaded the second image which comprised of Aaron and his parents. His father had a steely gaze same with his mother, a slim, graceful woman, who glared at the camera. She had the same light brown eyes like Aaron. Swallowing hard, my eyes darted towards Aaron who stood between his parents. He looked horrible, like he was forced to take the picture.

They look stiff. I replied Mo's message.

But as another picture came in as a message, screams tore through my ears. I glanced around to see people hurdle close to the door. I didn't think, I ran towards the entrance, pushing through the cluster of people. The smell of sweat and deodorants wafted through my nose.

When I finally got the chance to push through the crowd and out of the stuffy, hot classroom, there on the floor. Aaron punched a man in the face.
