Despite the rife colossal depreciation in the standards and quality of formal education across the nation, some exemplary Nigerian children have risen to the task of proving, beyond every reasonable doubt, that there is still an eximious promise for our collective future. Below is one of such rare geniuses discovered in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.


So we had this inaugural Secondary School Students Open Letter Competition between Monday 17 and Tuesday 18, September; after which Master Zacharias Godgift, a 12 year-old JS2 student of Child of Promise Academy, Azikoro, emerged as the unanimous winner with his open letter to Nigeria's President, Muhammadu Buhari.


As you will see, the conspicuous X-factor in this pre-teenage boy's letter is his succinct albeit cogent
elaborations, organisational skills and unbelievable command of the English language-definitely a laudable achievement for someone who has spent only about a year in secondary school.

STATE OF THE NATION


The problems facing Nigeria are numerous. Over seventy percent of the population live below a US dollar daily. This portrays the high level of poverty. Many people are practically living from hand to mouth.


Secondly, corruption, as a cankerworm, has eaten deep into the fabric of the country. From the leaders to the followers, the majority of Nigerians have their hands deep in one corrupt practice or another.


Thirdly, the ethnic groups are not treated with equity. This causes conflict and enmity, which can lead to the destruction of lives and property; and the insurgency that has destroyed the lives of people.


Fourthly, due to the high level of poverty in the country, a lot of children die of malnutrition, diseases and the likes. Their parents cannot afford to provide the necessary nutrition and health care.


Worse still, the number of unemployed persons is continually on the rise. The hope of getting a job after graduation for the average Nigerian graduate becomes dimmer by the day. This is because the standard of education has dropped. This has caused social problems as an average Nigerian graduate cannot compete favourably with his or her counterparts in other parts of the world.


As bad as it is, there are still measures which you could take to solve these problems. First of all, your government should be preoccupied with creating jobs for the teeming population of jobseekers. The availability of jobs would reduce the rate of poverty in the country.


In addition, the educational sector needs to be revamped to meet international standards.


Moreover, the legal system should be made to punish persons found guilty of corruption and violence accordingly, in order to serve as a deterrent to others.


Finally, as the 2019 general elections are fast-approaching, your government should ensure that they are free and fair; so that people will have rest of mind while and after voting, and the candidates of the people's choice win.
