The Independent Corrupt Practices and Others Related Offences Commission on Monday invited members of the Progressive-Minded Legislators in the House of Representatives to a meeting with the agency’s chairman, Justice Emmanuel Ayoola.

This is just as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has summoned the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Mr. Femi Egbetokun, over the alleged mismanagement of N30bn by officials of the state government.

Our correspondent gathered that the ICPC summoned the suspended legislators, led by Mr. Dino Melaye, to the meeting fixed for Tuesday (today), in furtherance of the commission’s investigation of the group’s allegation that N9bn, out of the N11bn allocated to the House in 2008 and 2009, was mismanaged.

It was gathered that the group, who were suspended on June 22 by the House, shifted attention to the ICPC, following what one of them described as the agency’s delay in concluding the matter. Our correspondent sighted two of the members of the group within the premises of the ICPC on Monday, where they had gone to confirm today’s appointment.

The group had submitted a petition to the EFCC Chairman, Mrs. Farida Waziri, on June 21, in which it listed alleged underhand dealings by the Body of Principal Officers of the House led by the Speaker, Mr. Dimeji Bankole, in the award of contracts in the House.

The commission had on the strentgh of the petition raided the Office of the Clerk of the House of Representatives and other administrative offices on June 22, during which its operatives retrieved documents relating to the contentious contracts.

One of the lawmakers that spoke in confidence with our correspondent at the ICPC headquarters, Abuja, on Monday, said that his members were getting impatient with the inability of the EFCC to conclude its investigation.

Asked whether the PML was exploring other means of settling the dispute with the leadership of the House, especially by involving top officials of the Peoples Democratic Party, he said it was not the party’s business.

When contacted, the ICPC Resident Consultant, Media and Events, Mr. Folu Olamiti, confirmed that the agency’s “chairman will meet with the lawmakers tomorrow (today) in continuation of our investigation.””

Meanwhile, Egbetokun is scheduled to appear before EFCC interrogators on Tuesday (today), as the commission enters another phase in its investigation of how N30bn allegedly disappeared from the state’s coffers.

A source in the commission told our correspondent that the speaker was invited because some of the funds allegedly siphoned through accounts of the local governments in the state and the Bureau of Lands and Survey passed though the Assembly.

The source said that the speaker was required to come and verify claims by the suspects arrested so far in connection with the scandal. The bureau’s Director-General, Mr. Gbenga Ogunnoiki, is still in EFCC’s custody.

The EFCC Head of Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Babafemi, confirmed the invitation of the speaker in a telephone interview with our correspondent.

On the appearance of the Speaker before a team of investigators yesterday, the source said: "Egbetokun made some startling revelations on how the state funds were managed.

"Based on his evidence, we may need to invite more officials of the state. But so far, the coming of the Speaker has boosted our investigations."
