I just got clarifications now from a banker friend. It is obvious I misunderstood the implications of the CBN directive. It turns out the reversal is only applicable to wrong fund posting by the bank ie its staff, not a customer. In the past, if a bank staff mistakenly credits your account while on duty, he either had to pay for that from his own pocket, beg you to refund him or lose his job. Now with this directive, he can immediately debit your account for that fund without needing your permission.

If the money has been withdrawn, the account would be placed on PND which means post no debit.

The account holder can only deposit money into the account but won't b able to withdraw #1.

My advice to the OP.

Go to court, u don't need the service of a lawyer, just some sort of affidavit costing less than #500, take it to ur bank, your bank will contact the beneficiary or they either place his Account on lien or PND.

You don't. Happened to me this year. Sent 200k to a wrong account. There was nothing the bank could do. Went to a magistrate Court, met the court clerk and paid 15k for the order which came out in 2weeks. Lawyers will charge you professional fee

you are calling the banks useless when you are the ignorant person here. the bank has no right to freeze third party account following a complain by the second party but without any legal mandate to do so in respect of a transaction between the bank and the second party.

It's not a one size fits all resolution
Different banks have different procedures.
All these court order and affidavit and police report are all false.
The government CANNOT take a Kobo out of any account except the account holder obliges.
If the recipent doesn't okay it, there is nothing that can be done.
If you mistakenly pay 200k into my account and my account officer calls me, and I say it is a debt you repaid, or services I rendered to you... What happens.
Where will you even get my phone number to call me. I'd sue my bank for disclosing my phone number to strangers.

The Op wants to know what can be done.
Different banks have different procedures, but all is a function of the account owner being RESPONSIBLE & REASONABLE.

Finally, there are like 2-3 fail safes for you to confirm the details of the recipient before the transfer happens. If you are negligent and don't take care, the banks won't be liable for litigation.

it has happened to me before, if you meet good cashier he will help you to retrieve your money and send it to your destination account. it's not something hard, just go to bank and tell the cashier helped you to post the money to help you solve it.

I can't believe for the life of me, that in this time and age, a simple recall protocol cannot be initiated say within a minute, 5 minutes, up to say thirty minutes after a transaction protocol has been initiated. This is a big let down, honestly.

And not only because of crime and human error, but because of network and system errors that play havoc once in a while to which the individual is entirely not at fault. How many times have I have I sent money, First Bank, GTBank, Diamond, Access, Ecobank that you get a system fault/error prompt only to discover later that the transactiin indeed was processed....yes, twice, thrice and as many times as you were fooled by the dodgy system when obviously you were anxious to get the transaction done.

There's a disclaimer on every bank deposit slip that says they're not liable for wrong information provided during transactions so you're on your own .

Go to court and get court order, go to your bank with the person's account name and number. The bank would now freeze the person's account.

If the bank dares freeze the person's account or return the money back to the sender that made the wrong transaction without the consent of the owner of the account, the bank will be in trouble.

We all know we have a lot of dishonest people in our country, so, what can one do if one mistakenly credits the wrong account or overpays as the case may be and the recipient refuses to make a refund??

First step would be to alert your bank and hope that the recipient doesn't withdraw the money.. The account would be temporarily frozen and the transaction reversed in a week.
