One person has been killed while three others sustained injuries in Yobe as the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) held its Ashura procession on Friday.

It was gathered that a clash occurred between the men of the Joint Task Force and members of the IMN shortly after the religious group rounded off its Ashura procession with prayers around 8:30am near central hotel, Potiskum.

Abdulmaliki Sunmonu, Yobe State Commissioner of Police, confirmed the incident, stating that the clash was between the security agents and the Muslim group.

According to Sunmonu, the clash began when one of the Muslim protesters tried to snatch a security operative’s gun.

He promised to give an update when he gets full details of the incident.

However, one El-Tafseer, a member of the group, said they were attacked by the soldiers minutes after the Ashura procession was closed.

“We just sighted the soldiers armed with guns and sticks approaching us. They started beating and harassing us to disperse. We began to run when they fired gunshots sporadically. Three people were injured and a teenager, not our member, was hit by stray bullet in the head and he died in the hospital. They also arrested Malam Gambo Abbas and detained him.

“This attack is being pre-planned to deny us the right to religion. We have been observing this procession for the past 25 years and nothing like this has ever happened. So, I want everyone to know that the Commissioner of Police has not been sincere to you. What he claimed is not in our habit."
