traditions are not stupid, they might be abused but they are not, your concern should be those who abuse it and not the tradition itself, you're not wiser than your ancestors!

Where are the ancestors? Yeah, they're dead.

What did they know about Quantum Computing?
What did they know about Astro Physics?
What do they know about the curiosity mars rover?

Yes, I am wiser than them.

If you refuse to move forward with the world, stay in 13th century, but don't drag everyone down with you.

I like this thought. Obviously there is an “abuse” which is obvious. What would you suggest a solution?
enlighten the bride's parents
What were the judgments behind the tradition?
amanda was right when she said its symbolic, a bride can't just leare her family and and jump into another, it signifies a ceremonious transition
What does it signify, what has changed?
What’s the value to the bride’s family and to the new family being joined?
let's just say I won't collect more than 1k as bride price but just do it so I can recognize the union, you just don't take my daughter away from my me, I will just come against that person! tongue

Ms Adichie, you don't have to be against some thing that places value on you

Bride price is just to appreciate the parents for nurturing your wife to be, to womanhood

No intending suitors can ever pay the exact amount used or spent in grooming a girl child

Your father collect 10kobo as your bride price

That's his choice and it still fall into the bride price no matter how small the amount is.

what do you know about the pyramid of Giza? has your knowledge helped you unravel the mysteries of that pyramid? Our ancestors were not illiterates! Well, I'm not talking about knowing things, don't confuse knowledge to wisdom.

Mrs Adichie, I think one might as well get rid of the whole marriage institution altogether according to you, what is the whole point ? because lower animals don't have to publicly declare their affection towards each other before they pro create. Chimamanda, I can even go further, do you really need to love a woman to pro create ? No. In the western world highly ambitious women sometimes only look for a sperm donor to have babies. So where do we draw the line ? Bride price is part of our culture and it is here to stay. The payment of bride price is not a claim to ownership of the other person, it is symbolic in nature. A man that is asked to pay a heavy bride price does so voluntarily.
The union between a man and a woman in holy matrimony is voluntary. If a woman or a man feels the marriage is not working out he or she is free to leave.
MARRIAGE IS NOT A FORCED UNION SO ALSO IS BRIDE PRICE PAYMENT IS NOT FORCED ON THE MAN.

Who the pyramid epp? What has it contributed to our growth as humans?

In fact, what is it contributing towards the fields of technology and medicine today?

In fact sef, did the ancestors that saw it fit to start some primitive traditions even know anything about the pyramids?

If you like, don't forego that village mentality.

No bro. This idea is wrong. What matters in marriage is the love and understanding between the two people.. Wedding shouldn't be expensive. It should be made easy. The list mist families present is outrageous.. Infact it was never like this in the past.

Ask ur parents, wedding was not this expensive back then. Something is wrong somewhere now and elders and families are taking advantage of this, especially in poor homes..

I had a lady I loved so much and she loved me too but we couldn't marry becus of the marriage rite lists.

Today, I'm getting married to some one I love less.. She her self got married to another guy who could afford the traditional marriage rite but she is not happy. She tells me that.
U see stuff like this are the reason many young people marry partners they aren't too fond of..

Just the way we spend so much money to bury the dead. Pls there are things we shouldn't be doing at this stage..

its not wedding sir iy depends on ghe individuals

Nigerian writer, speaker, and activist, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has weighed in on the idea of bride price in Nigerian marriages.

She had an evening with some young people in Lagos yesterday, and someone asked a question about bride price.

According to her, her dad didn't receive any bride price during her wedding, he just collected 10kobo to make it symbolic.

She also revealed she is not a fan of bride price because it ruins things.

She said'

"I am not a fan of bride price. I think we should get rid of the whole idea of money in marriage, it ruins things. We are not selling anybody".

Ayam not understanding. Her dad didn't collect bride price, buh he collected 10kobo. Money for what na?
Same way she's bn twisting English to deceive d gullible abt her feminism hypotheses.
Truth is, what works for "A" ll not necessarily work for "B".
Only God knows how many families they've destroyed while enjoying their own family.

Igbo culture has made it mandatory that the parents collect bride price, it is a symbol of selling their daughter to the man, though these days they use ceremony to cover the whole thing and make it look as if the woman wasn't sold, but deep down, they all know she was sold to her husband.
This point got me, chai! u Sabi. grin

Social media opinions cannot change tradition, we should stop deceiving ourselves with these bride price blah blah blah.

If as a man,you are charged higher than you can pay to marry, you simply back-off since you can't afford it, not ranting because of your inability to meet up the needed requirements, afterall some tribes don't charge high.

And as a woman, once a man pay your bride price to wife you, have it in mind that your submissiveness isn't negotiable.

Tradition is tradition and social media can't change it.

Even submissiveness to your parents is negotiable, so stop yarning trash.
