Doug Ellis has passed away at the age of 94.

The former Aston Villa chairman passed away in the night, a close relative told Birmingham Live.

Ellis had two spells as Villa chairman from 1968 to 1975 and 1982 until 2006.

He then sold the club to Randy Lerner.

Villa won the league in 1981 and the European Cup in 1982 with Ellis in charge.

However, he was very known for sacking managers during his time At Villa Park, earning the nickname 'Deadly Doug'.

Ellis was chairman to 14 managers throughout his spells with the Midlands club.

He also rebuilt most of Villa Park during his tenure, with the club revealing the Doug Ellis Stand.

The entrepreneur had a short career as afootballer, with Ellis spending two years as a schoolboy at Tranmere Rovers.

Aston Villa tweeted: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of our former chairman Sir Doug Ellis.”

Villa have also confirmed a minute’s silence will take place at Villa Park next Saturday before the Championship side face Swansea.

The Villa players will also wear black armbands.
