When I read on the internet the controversy generatd by Nigeria's Federal Government budget of 10 billion for the country's 50th Independence Anniversary, I grinned. What type of country is this? What kind of people are called Nigerians? For God's sake, how much is 10 billion naira to many Nigerians? How much is this amount in pound sterling and US dollars that some legislators were so enraged that they said Nigeria had nothing to show for 50 years of independence? They even forgot that the party through which most of them got to the National Assembly has controlled the Federal and State goverments for 11 of the 50 years of independence! Nigerians marvelled t the amount earmarked for the anniversary probably because most of them are enmeshed in abject poverty in the mist of plenty. The probm Omokemesi
