U-20 World Cup: England 1 - 1 Nigeria by supereagle(m): 7:00am On Jul 14, 2010
Nigeria’s under-20 women team, the Falconets begin their campaign at the FIFA under-20 Women World Cup today, when they face England in a group C pairing in Augsburg, Germany.

The Falconets are making their fourth straight appearance in the tournament and according to the team coach Adat Egan, the Falconets have all it takes to win the trophy.

He was quick to remember the exploits of the team in the last edition 2008 in Chile, where they were unlucky by not progressing to the semi-final. The Falconets were stopped by France, after they conceded a late minute goal to lose out with a 3-2 defeat.

However, this time around coach Egan said that his girls are battle ready. Adding that they are out to make Nigerians proud after the disappointment of South Africa 2010.

Egan said that the girls are in top form and they can hold their ground against the English girls.“We are facing a real test of our intention against the English team. But we have a formidable team, better than what we have during the qualifiers,”said the coach.

“I have a team of very disciplined and committed players, who are willing to learn and want to make a name for themselves and their country. We are confident we will achieve our targets.”

The Falconets have been tipped to emerged from the group featuring England, Mexico and Japan. This is the second time Nigeria and England are meeting in the tournament, they met in the group stages at Chile 2008 and it ended in a 1-1 draw.

“ We are in a tough group. England and Japan have shown their stuff in different tournaments that they are no push overs, but I remain positive that we will make it out of the group”, added Egan who coaches Pelican Stars of Calabar.

Wish them all the best . . . Hope they could bring back the respect in soccer back to Nija, at least if the men refused to do it, the woman might just be able to

They possess the commitment and urgency that our papa eagles have always lacked.
I was very impressed, but the technical crew should teach them to play like a team in front of goal.

Oparanozie pegs England back

Nigeria deservedly took a point from England in Augsburg as the teams began their campaign in Group C of the FIFA U-20 Women´s World Cup Germany 2010 by battling to a 1-1 draw.

In a physical encounter, England found the sweltering conditions tough going and that enabled the African nation – who are regulars at this event – to finish strongly.

The early exchanges saw Jane Moore go close for Mo Marley's side while Nigeria preferred to rely on their strong defence and counter-attack. In the 25th minute Esther Sunday had a great opportunity as the ball came back to her in the area but goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer was equal to it. It signalled a bout of Nigeria pressure with Desire Oparanozie failing to convert and Glory Iroka coming close.

But just as Nigeria seemed to be getting on top, England took the lead. Jordan Nobbs was put through for a one-on-one with the goalkeeper but defender Osinache Ohale was able to clear. The danger hadn´t passed however with Kerys Harrop's header at the back post exploiting a mistake by the keeper.

There were chances for Oparanozie and Ebere Orji at the start of the second half as Nigeria really began to press, two great Oparanozie runs failing to bring the scores level. However the pressure was bound to tell eventually and on the hour came a deserved equalizer for Adat Egan´s team. This time the surge came from Orji and from her centre, Oparanozie shot towards goal. Spencer got a hand to it but couldn't prevent the ball rolling over the line.

After that Nigeria looked the more likely winners but England stayed disciplined in defence. Always, though, with a close eye on the dangerous Oparanozie though.

With a point apiece, both teams will be looking for a maximum haul in their next outing when England take on Mexico while Nigeria face Japan. Both games are on Saturday in Augsburg.

And to think President Jonathan would have killed the dreams of these girls when He decided to ban Nigeria from all international football competitions. I hope all those who supported the decision then, are beginning to see how stupid a decision it was.

Why is the entire first team made up of Igbos? Can nigerians ever stand on themselves or ever do anything without Igbos? This should be BIAFRAN NATIONAL TEAM.

Some people's deep bigotry, tribalistic and racial prejudices are the MAJOR reasons why Nigeria cannot win anything in this world! Individual skills? Yes, we have plenty but together (team) spirit in everything (even nation building) is LESS than ZERO! Thanks to people like this who if are so bigoted they can only turn progress into regression! BTW, contrary to your tribalistic rant, the entire TEAM is NOT igbo! They are Nigerians and if they so thought like you, they wouldn't have chosen to represent Nigeria. . .what a low-life bottom sucker! angry angry angry angry angry

If Nigeria had played well enough, they would have defeated England.

But, anyway it's great that it ended in a tie instead of a loss.

It is this kind of reasoning that has kept us where we are, and has made us not move an inch forward, since our existence as a nation.
Very absord.

In Igbo land girls are free, they   are not caged as is the case in some other parts; so many igbo girls play football with their brothers as they are growing up. Anyway, the coach is not ibo so if the team is dorminated by ibo girls it must be that they are the best

If the Internet insults hauled at Bialegend by Nairaland moral hall-watchers are directed at Nigerian institutionalized regressive models such as quota system and federal character crap, a new progressive light would have been shown on the colonial contraption called Nigeria.

The same goes to the location of federal government controlled economic infrastructures. There is no acceptable reason for the federal government of Nigeria to deny the people of the defunct Eastern region of Nigeria the international airport in the class of MMA and NAA.

That No 9 is a waste pipe, another Yakubu in the form of a woman, she couldn't even score any of the chances she was offered, even the goal she scored was a scramble, she almost lost that one too. Just too big, come to think of it, she claims she's 16yrs, if that's 16yrs old, then Yerima should not be made to face the wrath of the law for marrying a 15yrs old  angry

Dear friends, please let us move away from ethnic sentiment and prejudice, and join hands to build a great Nigeria that will be the envy of other nations. If the best is from the south, East, North or West, so be it. We are one Nation, one people.
