Android-Is-No-Longer-Free Google has announced changes in how European smartphone and tablet makers can use Google’s Android apps in response to the EU’s $5 billion fine. Going forward, EU manufacturers will now have to pay Google a license fee to bundle Google’s suite of mobile apps. In July, the European Commission fined Google for breaching EU antitrust rules by allegedly forcing EU manufacturers to pre-install Google search and their suite of bundled apps, paying manufacturers to make Google the exclusive search app, and by obstructing the development of competing mobile software. As part of this ruling, Google was told they needed to stop this behavior. Google has stated that the bundling of Google Search and Chrome funded the development of the Android operating system. Without the pre-installation of these apps, European mobile device manufacturers will now need to pay a license fee to bundle Google’s Android apps such as Google Play, Maps, and YouTube. “Since the pre-installation of Google Search and Chrome together with our other apps helped us fund the development and free distribution of Android, we will introduce a new paid licensing agreement for smartphones and tablets shipped into the EEA. Android will remain free and open source.” writes Google’s Hiroshi Lockheimer in a blog post. Google Chrome and Search will also be available, but will need to be licensed under separate agreements. “Second, device manufacturers will be able to license the Google mobile application suite separately from the Google Search App or the Chrome browser,” the announcement continues. “Since the pre-installation of Google Search and Chrome together with our other apps helped us fund the development and free distribution of Android, we will introduce a new paid licensing agreement for smartphones and tablets shipped into the EEA. Android will remain free and open source.” This new license agreement is planned to go into effect on October 29th, 2018 for all new smartphones and tablets launched in Europe. Jaunker and his crew thought they were smart ........ Let's now see if Jaunker would call this unfair discrimination and therefore attempt to impose another fine ........ 9 Likes 2 Shares |

Lexusgs430: lol, dem wan drain Google. Two hefty fines in 2 years haba! Google did the right thing tho and this might hasten up the public release of Fuchsia. Europeans will be the most affected because OEMs will extra charge for their devices. Happy time for OEMs that apply skin to their UX 2 Likes |

Here is the case for all people who don't know full detail, EU commission filed a case against Google for forcefully adding services like Google play and search which others third party apps need in order to function. Google if losses has to pay that amount of money. So Google changes it's terms and EU manufactures now have to pay to use Google Services like Android. Till now it is just for EU region so other regions are safe. 24 Likes 1 Share |

The bolded on the OP's post is misleading. Google maintained that Android is free and a open source project. Who they are charging are the phone manufacturers that will put Google apps on their phones and not the phone users. Phone manufacturers like Samsung and the likes will only pay for Google apps and not Android OS itself. Google also maintained that they won't force any manufacturer to preload their devices with Google apps, rather any manufacturer that wants to preload their apps with Google apps will have to pay for the apps. That doesn't mean that users will purchase the apps even if manufacturers refuses to preload Google apps on their phones. 14 Likes 1 Share |

Some of this open source free softwares and services ain't really free, some harvest your personal data and sell it off to government agencies and advitisement firms. This is a win win for google, if Europeans want a free OS, they must accept other google services and be humble like the rest of andriod users around the world else they should pay for the custom android without google services. This reminds me of how US congress were making a fool of themselves in front of mark zuckerberg as if Facebook put a gun to anyone's head to use it's services. Politicians should understand infotech world before throwing around fines any how, MTN fine would still be paid by Nigerians whether through high tarrifs or job cut 8 Likes |

PhenomenalMorgan: Making it open source is what made them dominate the market. There are many better OS out there. I particularly prefer the BlackBerry OS. It is the openess and flexibility (being customizable by both manufacturers and end users) that is their strength. 1 Like |
