The fact that you are paying a rent does not make you a tenant. A tenant is anybody who is occupying a particular premises or house. The simple definition is If A who pays money to a Landlord ask B to be staying in the house B is thus recognised as the tenant. This does not however prevent A from being a Tenant if he stays in the house. This can be further illustrated by the story of Mrs Akinoso who uses a building for selling Amala without paying any money. When she was about to be ejected abruptly it was said that she is a tenant and should be served quit notice first and other procedure of ejecting a tenant should be followed the fact the she does not pay rent does not makw her less a tenant. The definition of tenant thus entails squatters or anybody they is in possession of the house. What is important to being a Tenant is however the fact that you are in possession of the house you live in. It should not be forgotten however that POSSESSION which is important to being a Tenant must be legal possession as a trespassers cannot be recognised as a tenant.
